Reptile Visitors

I've noticed that we have been getting a lot of reptile visitors lately.

This frog has decided our fish pond is the perfect place to cool off during the day. I even saw him in my daughter's inflatable swimming pool one afternoon.

We found this little toad hiding in one of the logs that encloses our garden yesterday.

This red-eared slider turtle found her way to my drive the other night. She's pretty big and this is the second time I've found one in the last few months. You can read about my first red-eared slider turtle rescue here

And of course, we've got lizards a plenty. These cool little guys are Texas Alligator Lizards. I saw a group of three run into our pomegranite tree the other day.

This green anole lizard was doing a little dance on my AC unit right outside my window. You can see him stick his little red neck pouch out while he's dancing.

We've also got grass snakes and I've seen them about three times this year so far. This photo is from last year when I caught one chasing a frog through the yard. As you can see, the frog didn't win the race. Sorry if this photo is sad for anyone. Snakes gotta eat too. =/

What do you think of reptiles? Are there any wild reptiles where you live?

    1. I used to feel the same way... I don't know why but maybe over the past 2 years I'm just not scared of wild snakes anymore...as long as they are just grass snakes!

    1. We are pretty careful of the snakes and the lizards are mostly too fast for anyone to catch anyways.

  8. Oh, boy! You get everything. Reptiles don't bother me. In fact, I like them. Now, if they surprise me, I'll holler, but that's true of almost anything that surprises me.

    1. I love reptiles :) When my brother lived here, we had a bearded dragon. The lizard is still alive and lives with him at his new house. Even Nibblet surprises me sometimes!

  12. The frogs are great, but I really don't like snakes.I have seen too many rattle snakes and the copperheads. I had a big snake in my yard last week, and I chased it off with the hose. My cats will chase a snake and so will the birds.Have a great day.

    1. I've never seen a poisonous snake thank goodness! I've heard that cats are excellent snake hunters, although I wouldn't want any of yours to get hurt by venomous snakes... I don't mind the grass snakes much, I hope they'll take care of some of these voles around here for me.

  14. I grew up in Southern California, where there are rattlesnakes. So I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of snakes (I don't hate them or anything ... I just kind of leave them alone). But I do kind of like frogs, lizads and turtles. :)

  19. We have some harmless garden snakes here in Florida. Many years ago while I was still ambitious and weeding the flower beds around our house, I thought I was pulling out a pretty pink root until it started to wiggle. I think I never dropped something that fast, and the snake and I both took off. Another time, a bigger black snake found its way up the outside exhaust of our electric dryer. While the snake didn’t survive, the dryer did, but only after an expensive service call.

    1. I think I would have had the same exact reaction Bruny! While I'm not especially scared of them anymore, I don't really try to get too close or pick them up or anything.

  20. I'm afraid I'm not a fan of the reptiles. We have a few little lizards here - which is fine - but San Diego has a lot of rattlers. We've seen them in the canyons here while hiking and it's NOT fun! My friend (whose house is on a canyon, as is ours) actually had her dog bit by a rattler the other day - but luckily she was fine! I didn't realize they could "dry bite" and not release venom. Still my friend is completely freaked and redoing their back yard to try to snake-proof it!

    1. Yea I don't do venomous snakes LOL. I've only ever seen water moccasins before, but not near my house or anything. I didn't know that rattlesnakes could dry bite either? That is one lucky dog! Glad it's ok!

  21. I remember when I lived in Pennsylvania, frogs would indeed show up at the most interesting places. Now we have lots of grasshoppers. Our homeless ones here in Arizona will show up with "prizes" of the dead variety like lizards, mice and snakes.

  22. WE don't have many reptiles around us, but see the occasional grass snake outside the city. Cool toadies (that's what my daughter called all frogs and toads)!

  23. I don't mind any of those reptiles and for the record, I really dig me some lizards, but those SNAKES just gotta go! Ugh!

  24. I love the photo of the toad peeping out from his hiding place.

    1. Me too! My daughter picked a piece of wood off of that spot and there was Mr. Toad! Was kind of surprising for her!

  25. Oh wow, you have quite the wildlife! We see snakes around in our grass. I've seen a frog once.

  26. We only have frogs and toads in our garden, and only once a very little salamander. I like to chase on them, but when Granny sees one, she's jumping higher than the frog. I don't know why...
