The Story of Our Two Feline Sisters

I believe in teaching our children and young adults in the importance of animal adoption. If we're able to show our kids at a young age just how important pet adoption is, it's surely something they will pass on to their own children. This post is written by our new friend, Erwin, from Cats Around the Globe. I know that you will love reading it as much as I did. It sends a wonderful message out about cat adoption and pet adoption in general. Enjoy!

As a kid, I always had a thing for animals (what kid doesn’t right?) but my parents where not so keen on the responsibilities.

But I was pretty persistent, and after months of begging my parents caved and I was allowed to have a cat. But my dad said that I should take care of the cat and also do the research on what it takes to have a cat as a pet.

So I did, and we came to the topic of cat breeds. I had this huge book, a cat encyclopedia (this was around 1997 so internet was still in its early days) and it contained a list of every cat breed imaginable.

I had my preferences of course, like the Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest cat. My dad came up to me and told me that those were options, but that I had not even thought about a regular “domestic” cat - a cat of no particular breed.

He told me about how they (my parents) had a cat before they had children, and how that cat was adopted from a shelter and how great a cat it turned out to be. I agreed and I ended up adopting a domestic kitten.

Erwin and Katja.

That kitten turned out to be Katja, a cat that would ignite my love for cats even further and be my companion for the remainder of my childhood and adolescence.

Katja was a great pet for 12 years, she passed away in 2010. Katja showed me that a cat does not have to be of a particular breed nor type to be an amazing pet.

I am now married and 2 years ago, my wife and I decided to yet again, get a cat. Or better yet, cats. It was already clear for both of us, that we wanted to adopt cats from our local animal shelter. As that, in our opinion, is the best way to help cats.

We came across two cats, sisters, called Holly and Molly who where dumped in a box near the side of a road and were taken in by the shelter. It was love at first sight and Holly and Molly are our companions to this day.

Holly and Molly causing mischief? ;)

The feline sisters hanging out together.

All cats (pets for that matter) and special, but remember that shelters and pounds are packed with animals waiting for a good home. So if you have to choose, think about getting a pet from a shelter!

  13. I think it's great you were able to adopt siblings! When we adopted our first cat, she was part of an abandoned litter, and she was so lonely at first I really regretted not bringing home two of them.
    Great post!
