Understanding Your #CuriousCat | How Much Do Cat Owners Really Know?

Cats are creatures of curiosity. They like to explore, hunt, mark their territory, sleep, play, and eat, of course. This post is brought to you by Royal Canin, who recently conducted a survey of cat owners to see how much they really know about their cats.

From the results of the survey, Royal Canin has put together an infographic with some pretty interesting statistics. Did you know that there are more pet cats than there are pet dogs in the United States? I'm sure our cat friends can appreciate that statistic.

What I find interesting is that many cat owners choose their cat's food by how tasty it is. In actuality, a cat is more interested in the aroma and texture of their food. This does make sense now that I think about it. Kitty Kitty Meow Meow would never touch lunch meat no matter how much I offered it to her. I always found it strange, but I guess it just didn't smell good to her. Or maybe she wasn't a fan of the texture.

When it comes down to choosing a good cat food, many cat owners don't consider their cat's health according to the Royal Canin survey. A high percentage also don't consider other factors like a cat's age, weight, or breed.

Another interesting find on Royal Canin's survey is that a high percentage of cat owners are uninformed when it comes to their cat's lifestyle. Besides sleeping, cats really do have a lot of other important things to do. Take it from Honey Delite.

Play - Cats like to play and treat their toys as their "prey". Of course, there are those times when your cat catches live prey and decides to play with it... that's always fun! For the cat, anyways.

Curious Cat Activities - Play

Mark Territory - Cats mark their territory by rubbing their heads up against things. They also use scratching with their claws to mark their territory.

Vocalize - Cats can make up to 100 different sounds! Which is actually way more than a dog can make.

Meow Kitty

Eat - This is a pretty important part of any cat's day. Cats eat many small meals throughout the day. They like to snack or graze.

Hide - Cats spend a large percentage of their day hiding. I guess hiding is best if you want to get a nice nap in without any interruptions!

  1. Lots of interesting stuff in this post......Sam isn't a "hider" for whatever reason - he sleeps out in the open and rarely is it a surprise to find him in a spot that he's gone to for some peace and quiet. Part of that probably is because it's just me and his Dad here with him in a three story house so he can be out in the open ANYWHERE and get a quiet nap in. When he was first adopted he'd hide - he was a tiny kitten in a huge house and needed the security of being in a safe spot he thought nobody to "catch" him. Anyway, great info - good post - enjoyed it!

    1. Well, sounds like he's pretty comfortable just being out in the open and has lots of options too! Thank you very much Pam!

  3. Us dogs and Mom spend so much time trying to figure this crazy animal out but it is tough. They are so very different and independent. We would love to learn what makes cat bro Bert tick as he behaves like a dog most of the time, Sophie is a true cat. Nice post, like some of the stats. Us dogs have sampled the cat food, Mom, never. Ours eat what is healthy for them regardless of taste or texture and only dry.

    1. I had a hard time figuring out my KKMM too Emma. Hope you enjoyed the cat food you've sampled before! ;) I think it's good that they are eating what's healthy for them.

  7. I love hiding and eating but I don’t sleep as much as the normal cat. I’m usually up most of the day and I sleep at night just like the peeps.

    1. You do seem like a pretty high energy cat for some reason CK. But I have seen your midnight snacking videos! ;)

  8. Interesting stuff. I did know most of it. I do feed my kitties two kinds of dry food because of preferences, but they all get the same canned food. They all eat out of every dish anyway, so feeding different types of canned food just doesn't make sense. They are all about the same age and healthiness.

    1. Sounds like you have a good plan for them and know them pretty well. :) Thanks for visiting and commenting!

  9. This was interesting, my lady of the house didn't know that well what kind of preferences for food a cat might have. I have quite a good apetite, I eat almost everything that is offered to me! I do have many different meow sounds, and I sure like to sleep. I sleep well during night time, but daytime naps are good too. I'm a very social cat, so I don't hide that much.

    1. It's good that you aren't a picky eater Carlos. It can be hard to find yummy food for the picky cats. Sounds like you've got a pretty good lifestyle!

  11. Those are some very interesting facts I didn't know about my cats!

  12. I understand why flavor might be important. If the cat won't eat it, buying it was pretty pointless!

  13. That was terrific, Ann. I *did* know a lot of that information, but I'm always, always fascinated to see it all compiled -- it really shows just how amazing cats really are. :)

    1. I agree. I also knew some of this stuff, but like to see the results of a survey. I hadn't heard about the flavor thing before though, which I find pretty intriguing.

  14. I didn't know that cats marked their territory with their claws....that would explain all the scratched up pine in our house....they truly do own the whole place!
When we switched our dog's food we also switched the cats to something better quality. I didn't know what to look for as much as with the dogs, but took the recommendation of our pet supply store's personnel. It really did seem to make a difference in Samantha's health! The fact that aroma plays a big part doesn't surprise me, the reason the dogs want to get into the cat food is because it smells so good! :)

    1. I was a little surprised by the scratching thing too. Cat food usually does smell super yummy, so it's no surprise your dogs are wanting to eat some!

I love how you illustrated some of the survey findings with your photos and cool graphics!
The findings were definitely interesting. ...though apparently I now have the blogosphere thinking I eat cat food! haha!

    1. Thank you Glogirly! I hope your diet consists of more than just cat food, but bravo to you if you have tried it before! I have eaten some dog treats before :)

  16. Very interesting. Actually I guess I am most surprised that more people have cats rather than dogs. Honestly I thought the opposite was true. Who knew.

Now I do know that cats are finicky about smell/texture with foods. I recently bought some cat treats that were small jerkey bits, and were made of venison/fish. Only one of the four cats would eat them (and eat them she did!!). Of course Gracie was delighted that the kitties turned up their little finicky noses at these treats (venison are you kidding?), and just scoffed them down. Ha!
