Vegetable Gardening With the Dog

Since last year, I've been maintaining a few flowerbeds in my backyard. With access to almost any kind of flower or plant I want, it's easy to make a pretty flower garden. I've always liked the idea of growing my own vegetables, but just never got around to doing it.

A few weeks ago, my father gave my daughter a small tomato plant potted up in a big planter and put it on our porch for her to take care of. That gave me the idea of doing a vegetable container garden on the front porch. I've gradually been adding new vegetables, fruits, and herbs to my "collection" on the porch.

So far we have basil, zucchini, tomato, bell peppers, parsley, dill, thyme, and strawberries. Everything seems to be growing very nicely, except the strawberry plants. They are doing OK, but some of them just don't look that great.

Our tomato and zucchini plants are growing like weeds, however and I'm shocked at just how quickly they grow! I took these photos last week, and if you can believe it that zucchini and tomato plant are even bigger than they are in this picture. The bushes in the background look kind of funny because they were overgrown and got a nice trim recently. We can't wait to eat all of our good home-grown produce.

And my youngest daughter loves going out on the porch to play in the evenings once it cools down. Shiner and the baby are always out there busy snoopervising things and making sure everything is in order.

I haven't added anything new to the collection in a little while, so we may go out and pick out a new vegetable later today. What are your holiday weekend plans?

  2. We changed on how we plant our vegetables due to Sugar's little furry friends. For years now, I've been planting vegetable in pot. Have to experiments which works best ... tomato and been trying out different varieties. You got great helpers. Golden Woofs

    1. We have furry friends too... voles. I've heard they like to dig up vegetables and things so maybe it's good I planted these on the deck in pots. We always have an abundance of all different varieties of tomatoes here. We usually get more than we can eat...

  3. I miss having a vegetable garden! When my kids were young, we grew most of our own veggies. It was such a great experience, so satisfying - and the kids loved picking-time. Enjoy!!

    1. I wasn't either really. It can be a lot of work. But it gives me something to do. Not that I need anymore stuff to do, but it's kind of relaxing I guess.

  6. Your garden looks great! I love fresh veggies and do a lot of gardening (flowers too). But it can be hard work, and frustrating when things don't do well! That's what I spent most of Sunday doing....working in the gardens!

    1. I guess it's not so frustrating for me because if something dies, I have a million flowers at my disposal at the nursery lol.

  7. I did container vegetable gardening when I lived in a townhouse. This year I'm doing a square foot garden. It's so rewarding! And Puggy loves his veggies.

    1. We have the in-ground garden in the front but no veggies there. I could always just go and pick all the herbs and veggies I want from the nursery, but I wanted my own :)

  8. Oh I love this garden! We've been thinking about giving this a try for a while, though I fondly remember having small gardens that Huffle's predecessors would raid: as soon as there was corn, strawberries or any other fruit, they'd carefully eat it off the vine :) Here's hoping Huffle won't sneak all the good stuff :)
