Healthy Fruit for Your Dog

Feeding fruit to your dog is a good way to offer a tasty and low calorie snack. Plus, fruit is super healthy and full of vitamins and antioxidants. Still, there are many fruits that are not safe for your dog to eat. Before trying a new fruit with your dog, make sure to check whether or not it is safe for them.

We have several fruit trees here at our house that have been producing lots of yummy fruits lately. We have pear, apple, and peach trees. This means extra healthy fruit snacks for our dog and even the rats. Pears and apples are both healthy snacks for dogs as long as you remove the seeds because they can be dangerous for them.

What about peaches? I know dogs should never eat the pit of a peach, because it contains cyanide which is toxic. It could also cause an intestinal blockage. But what about the rest of the peach? Most of the information I have found says no, it is not safe to feed your dog peaches.

Admittedly, I have fed both my dog and rats peaches and nectarines in the past with no ill effects but have decided not to do this anymore. I think the chances of a little bit of peach making your pet sick are small, but why risk it?

And if you have a peach tree in your yard, you may want to check the ground underneath it to make sure there are no pits left over. I saw a few today that I need to pick up. Some wild critter has been enjoying the peaches from our tree and leaving the pits behind.

Can I have some?

So what types of healthy fruit CAN your dog eat? Here's a list of a few favorite healthy fruits for dogs:

  • Banana
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Cantaloupe
  • Watermelon
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Pineapple

Pear from one of our trees.

Shiner's favorite fruits include banana, strawberries, and apples. She doesn't seem very fond of blueberries, however. We have not tried to give her pears before, but will try this soon since we have a few that need to be eaten.

What about your dog? Do they like to eat fruit?

  1. Jasmine didn't JD doesn't. Cookie likes them sometimes. Bananas, watermelon, pineapple. Blueberries she likes frozen. Or I add them to her food.

    1. I know me either... Then I realized that I had never heard of too many DIY peach recipes for dogs with all the blog reading I do, so I decided to look it up.

  4. I've tried over and over again to get Titan to eat fruits and he just snubs em. He loves his meat and taters instead. :)

  6. Mauja and Atka love fruit, especially bananas. I hadn't even thought of letting them try peaches before. I knew the pits were bad news, but I was unaware that the fruit isn't good for them either. Rather stay on the safe side!

    1. I couldn't find any concrete evidence, but read that it's possible that cyanide could seep out into the flesh... although that means they would be bad for humans to eat as well... I think the risk is rather small. But still...

  8. Add grapes and raisins to the do not feed list. Can cause serious kidney damage.

    1. Yes, grapes and raisins are not good for many dogs. Others, it may not effect but the reasoning behind this is still not known.

  12. If you dropped a portherhouse steak and a bowl of fruit salad in front of my Bentley, the steak would be all yours. He absolutely adores all kinds of fruit except blueberries. Same goes for veggies. Baby carrots are some kind of magic treat for him. He does love peaches but I suppose better safe than sorry. By the way, I manage the social media for a local pet spa here in Orlando and I will happily be linking to your blog. Great articles.

  13. Honey loves many types of fruit and berries. But I'll admit pitting the cherries for her gets a little old. :)

As we plan ahead to moving aboard a boat next year, I'll need to research tropic fruits that are safe for dogs. Bananas are good. But what about papaya? Or passionfruit?

Thanks for the reminder to read before I feed.

    1. I *think* papaya is good. I know they make papaya treats for small animals like rabbits, and they usually love them! I don't see why dogs couldn't eat them too.

  16. We love fruit. All year we get bananas and apples, but in the summer we got other fresh fruits either just the fruit, frozen in water, or in our ice cream. Fruit is great for everyone.

  18. Luke LOVES fruit! Bananas, blueberries, strawberries, cantaloupe....the girls don't really care for any of it though, except for maybe apples (which I don't think Luke has tried yet). We used to give our dogs grapes way back when before we knew better! Luckily we never had an issue.

    1. I have also given Shiner a few grapes before I knew better. The thing with grapes is that they are unpredictable. Some dogs may react to them differently than others.

  19. Bain loves fruit, he loves mostly anything really =)

He's fascinated with banana peels (we never give it to him), instead of the banana itself, he'd rather have the peel. We usually pick blueberries every summer, and I always give him frozen ones as a cool treat.

  20. Just noticed the grapes comment. I too had given Bain some grapes before, he never had a reaction, but I did google it and now it's completely off the least of treats. Wouldn't want to chance anything.

    1. From what I've seen in the past, smaller dogs seem to be affected by grapes more than larger ones. I think a big dog would have to eat a whole lot of them to get sick. Kind of like with chocolate.

  21. Interesting. I didn't know that dogs shouldn't eat peaches. Ava usually get part of my apple at breakfast, it is her favorite.

  22. Leela absolutely loves strawberries! I've been forced to try to open the containers as quietly as possible, because if she hears me with them, she expects me to share. And really, it's hard to say no to those big brown eyes. Thanks for the list of tasty fruits to share with the pups!

  23. I'm glad my dog can eat apples! I usually cut it up and share some slices with my dog Buster. I had no idea peaches where bad for my dog. I had given him a few pieces, but I can assure you I won't do that anymore. I also went looking online and found this website that states things a dog can not have. It says apples, and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was just the seeds that where dangerous to eat?

  24. Dexter likes to eat bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. He will also eat some veggies. His favorite is carrots. His sister, Josie will take it and chew it up, leaving Dexter his favorite job of clean up. hehe.

  25. Great to know! I was eating a peach last night but I didn't give Harley any! Bananas, strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, apples, and a host of veggies have become our "fun food" This is such a great post Ann, thanks so much. Harley will definitely share so we can help get the word out!

  26. Ruby loves strawberries, apples and watermelon. Boca is not a big fan of fruit so far.

  27. Our pups love fruit! They get blueberries, pineapple, apple, some banana, and watermelon on a regular basis. Sometimes I'll top off their food bowls with some fruit, and sometimes they'll get some as a reward for obeying a command. Watermelon is also great as a refreshing snack in scorching temperatures these days!
