She Knows Where the Treats Are

Putting a few treats in my pocket is a good way to grab Shiner's attention.

How do you grab your dog's attention?

  14. Yep, I know that look. Now I only have to put my hands in my pocket--without treats--to get Honey's attention.

Now how in the world do you resist that face? Shiner should weigh 200 pounds. :)

  20. The dogs I know react to certain words, like 'treats' or 'walk'. Whenever they hear it, I have their attention :)

  21. Treats, leash, car keys. In that order.
    Shiner is a cutie pie.

  22. OK everyone. Here's the dog that really knows exactly why she takes me into my bank! We enter, my 166-lb Newfoundland girl, "Bubbles", and I, and she leads me to the Greetings Desk where we say hello to our greeter, and then she proceeds to lead me over to the Customer Service Desk, where I can comfortably sit, with her beside me, guarding me. It isn't long before someone comes to take care of our needs, and at that point we exchange friendly hello's, the person seats him/herself, and IMMEDIATELY - Bubby turns to sit facing the person at the desk - offering her ever so pathetically sad/despondent/desperate look with her big, brown, cow-ie eyes - at which time the person comments "Oh, what a lovely dog you have!" - not realizing that the reason she is going into this "Hollywood production" is because she knows darn well that the "treats for the service dogs" are hidden inside the bottom drawer of the desk, on the left-hand side of the person seated there. I swear my beautiful girl honestly believes that the sole reason we go to the bank is to get her treats! This I explain to the person: "That loving look is a ploy for her treats, situated in the bottom drawer of the desk." Instantly the man or lady stops what they are doing, reaches down, opens the drawer, and at that sound, "my dog's radar is peaked and her ears are twigged" and up comes the bag from which she is handed 4 or 6 chewy, yummy treats - one at a time........................while the person gets back to her job of processing my banking request. My Bubby cleans up each and every single crumb. She is neat and tidy - BUT I always carry Kleenex, just in case. Mustn't leave any mess. Once the banking part is done and the papers are exchanged, the conversation shifts automatically to Bubbles. ................. Each visit is an experience for me. For Bubby........nah....each visit is another opportunity to get a treat for the wonderful job that she is doing for her mummy each and every day. ........... and that is why, according to Bubbles, mummy goes to the bank! Cheers! Val and Bubbles, my Newfoundland Service Dog and very best "treat monster" (tee hee)

  25. That has been a big challenge for us in nose work. We know we get rewarded for a find, but we like to look at Mom's hand with the treats all the time. I have really improved on not doing that as much, Bailie still has some work to do.

  26. Cute pic! Rita is a bit of a treataholic but not all treats are created equal in her view. She's been known to snub a crunchy cookie treat! If I really want to get her attention, I say one of her BFF's names!

  27. Shiner, what a smart girl you are to figure out those treats. And I bet it helps to get the Mom to give one to you. How could she resist. You all have a great Friday.

  28. Your idea is just great. It's really effective, I even tried it with my poodles. Thanks for sharing this.
