Using Dental Chews for Better #DogDentalHealth

This post is sponsored by PetSmart, and the BlogPaws Professional Pet Blogger Network. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Dental Health Month, but Pawsitively Pets only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. PetSmart is not responsible for the content of this article.

Do you ever think about your dog's teeth? I mean, we as humans brush our teeth at least daily so wouldn't it only make sense to care for our dogs' teeth too somehow? Of course, it is easier said than done in many cases. There are a lot of dogs that will not tolerate having their teeth brushed.

Over 80% of dogs begin to show signs of dental disease by the age of 3. That means it's very important that you pay attention to your dogs teeth. The younger you start, the better. Even if you have a senior dog, it's never too late to start caring for their teeth.

Good dog dental health doesn't have to be a challenge. There is hope if your dog doesn't tolerate teeth brushing. Since February is Pet Dental Health Month, I've been more diligent about giving my dog dental chews on a daily basis. Shiner is not a fan of having her teeth brushed and it's hard for me to keep up with daily. Dental treats and chews are a great and easy way to help keep your dog's dental health in check.

Last week, I picked up some new dog dental health chews for Shiner to try out from PetSmart®. PetSmart is participating in Pet Dental Health Month this February. It's a month dedicated to helping pet parents learn how easy it can be to care for their pets' teeth.

PetSmart provides Total Lifetime Care for every pet, every parent, every time, by offering superior products, unmatched services, and superb customer service to pet parents and their pets. And I must say that the cashier at my PetSmart was very helpful and had some wonderful advice to give.

The selection of dog dental chews over at PetSmart was amazing and easy to find. In fact, I found a display with a variety of dog dental chews like Greenies®, Whimzees, Authority®, DentaStix®, and BLUE Bones®. In addition to this, the very first aisle in my local PetSmart store was full of nothing but dental chews for dogs and cats. They have some pretty awesome sales going on right now for Pet Dental Health Month.

Which dog dental chews did I choose for Shiner? I picked up a package of BLUE Bones®. Shiner has never tried these dental chews before. BLUE Bones are highly digestible dental chews help freshen doggy breath and make teeth sparkle. They are also the only dental chews for dogs with a unique blend of ingredients designed to help support joint, heart, and immune system health. They contain NO chicken (or poultry) by-product meals, and are corn, wheat and soy free.

There are many different varieties of BLUE Bones made for different sizes of dogs. I picked the Large BLUE Bones for Shiner because she weighs about 55 pounds. It's important to select the correct size of dental chews for your dog and feed the proper daily amount. I give her one chew a day, usually between her lunch and dinner in the afternoon. Here's a short video of Shiner enjoying her tasty BLUE Bones.

There are even BLUE Bones made just for puppies. These BLUE Bones are designed to help soothe sore gums for chewing puppies and contain extra vitamins that puppies need to grow up healthy and strong.

In addition to BLUE Bones, PetSmart also carries BLUE Wilderness Wild Bones. The Wild Bones are made with only the finest natural ingredients and are grain and gluten free.

This February, for Pet Dental Health Month we invite you to do something important for your dog's health. Visit your local PetSmart, check out their selection of chews for dog dental health, and pick up a bag for your dog. Click here to locate a PetSmart store near you. Caring for your dog's teeth has never been easier!

    1. Well, Shiner hasn't had too many Greenies honestly. So it's hard for me to say if they are better. I'm sure either one works well :) It's nice to have some variety sometimes though!

  2. I haven't tried the Blue bones, but I use Whimzees. They're all natural and for heavy chewers like my dog, they are great. I feed her one every other day and her teeth are in great health!

    1. Tell your mom good luck with that! Brushing is the best, but some kitties just won't let their humans do it. If your mom keeps trying, I bet you guys will let her brush your teeth :)

  11. Harley's a GREENIES kind of guy. He had his dental exam last week, and his Doodle Doc has asked us to incorporate an addition to our dental health regiment. I'm still working on the post for next week. Please let me know how Shiner enjoys the Bluebones - they look amazing!

  12. Ive heard that greenies have a chocking hazard/obstruction possibilities, we used to use them all the time but now I am worried. Any ideas on whether the blue bones can have the same issues?

    1. I think that with any sort of dental chew, bone, rawhide, etc. there is going to be some hazard of choking obstruction. That is why it's important to pick the right size chew for your dog. Also, using them with supervision is important too. Knowing how your dog eats these things and deciding whether or not they should have them is the best way to stay safe. Every dog is different, so I think just using your best judgment is key.
