7 Clean Litter Box Tips for Cat Owners

This post is sponsored by Bounty. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Bounty Paper Towels, but Pawsitively Pets only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Bounty is not responsible for the content of this article.

Keeping a clean litter box for your cat can be a challenge at times, but it doesn't have to be. I'll admit that there are days when I fall behind on my own cat's litter box maintenance. Many cats are picky about where they do their business, so if their litter box is not just right it's likely that they'll urinate outside of the box.

No one wants the hardship of getting rid of a cat urine mess in their home and that's why it's best to avoid them in the first place. When cat owners would bring their cats into our clinic for urinating outside of their litter box, we would give them a checklist to fill out to make sure they were providing their cat with a proper litter box setup. By following a few simple clean litter box tips, you shouldn't have to worry about cleaning cat urine messes in your home.

  • Have the same amount of litter boxes as you have cats, plus one extra. If you have two cats, experts say you should have three litter boxes. If you have a home with a lot of cats and space is limited, you can try adding larger sized litter boxes instead. Just buy a large storage bin and use it as a litter box.
  • Scoop your cat's litter at least daily. It's recommended that you scoop your cat's litter box at least daily, and maybe even more than that if you can.
  • Change your cat's litter completely when it's time. Because there are several types of cat litter available for purchase, you should follow the recommendations on the product that you are using. I use a clumping litter for my cat's box, and I need to completely change it out once a month. Non-clumping litter should be changed completely 1-2 times a week.
  • Clean your cat's box regularly. I wash my cat's litter box with water and soap each time I change out the litter. Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach, as they may deter your cat from using the box. To clean the box, I use Bounty Paper Towels. (I especially like Bounty with Dawn for this task.) After cleaning with mild dish soap, I will dry the box out with a Bounty paper towel.

  • Place litter boxes in low traffic, private areas. Cats like privacy when they are going to the bathroom. Who blames them? Put your litter boxes in places that are quiet and secluded. No one wants to be startled when they are trying to potty.
  • Get rid of the hood and scented litters. If your cat is making a cat urine mess outside of the box, you can try removing the hood or not using a scented litter. Many cats do not like boxes that have hoods. And some cats are picky about the kind of litter they will use.
  • Get a new litter box at least once a year. Plastic cat litter boxes don't last forever. Cats scratch the plastic leaving grooves in the box. These grooves trap odors and germs so it's best to get a new box every once in a while.

By following these clean litter box tips, you should be able to maintain a healthy cat litter box routine in your home. Your cats will be happy and shouldn't make a cat urine mess outside of their box. If your cat is still urinating outside of their litter box, consult with your veterinarian to make sure they don't have a medical condition.

Accidents are bound to happen occasionally, and when they do I like to use Bounty Paper Towels. They are durable enough for the messes my pets leave behind. With Bounty, I'm able to conquer pet messes quickly so I can forgive my pets faster. I couldn't stay mad at them for long anyways. They are just too darn cute! It's all about Furgiveness.

Who could stay mad at Victor? Not I, that's for sure. My cat, Callie, and I created our own Furgiveness video exhibiting how Bounty Paper Towels help us conquer the occasional cat mess in our home. One of which is a cat urine mess.

Hopefully, our tips will help you keep a clean litter box for your furry feline friends. Just remember that no one - not even humans - like using a dirty or broken toilet.

  1. I love Bounty! Lucy is an out of box thinker so I put a puppy pad near it and she goes on that. The only problem is when she is too close to the edge- then I need lots of Bounty :)

    1. Oh no! I had a problem with Callie peeing on my daughter's toys. I believe it was just a problem with the scooping. I had given the chore to my daughter, but noticed she wasn't doing very good so I've taken over now and problem seems to be solved.

  4. Mom has had cats her whole life and never had issues. She always has just one box no matter if it is 1 or 4 cats, never buys a new one, just cleans it regularly and scoops every morning. It works for us so far.

    1. That's awesome! I think if you keep up with it well, and things are working fine there isn't a need to change much. But some cats are picky... so these are just some of the things we told people who were having litter box problems.

  9. The mom is a fanatic when it comes to keeping our boxes clean. She scoops them 3-4 times a day (when she's not working). And no covered boxes or scented litters for us. We don't like them.

  10. These are great tips. We only have one box because we don't have room for two. Mommy hates scented litter - she says it makes poop smell perfumey! MOL Our box is covered, though, but we don't seem to mind it.

    1. Same here guys - just have one box. I only had a problem once but fixed it. I don't have much room and am not sure where I'd put another one. I also use a hood and Callie doesn't mind.

    1. Oh really?! How cool! I am not sure that the same rules might apply to a dog as a cat. But they might be helpful - thanks!

  12. I love your video! We have had litter box issues with some of our older cats. I think it's because the litter is downstairs and they have to go through a hole in the pantry door to get to it. It's the only place to keep the dogs away from it though. Sam also just has really bad aim, like Callie, (and a similar attitude...) sometimes!

    1. Thank you! I think it's OK to cut the older cats some slack. Sometimes, they just don't quite make it. Callie's aim was dramatized for the video MOL - she usually doesn't miss like that ;)
