Surprise Kitten

Is there really any better surprise than a kitten? Probably not. And as luck would have it, I came home on Saturday night to a surprise kitten.

My family and I had just come home from a birthday party on Satruday evening. My boyfriend is setting some things on the kitchen table and asks me, "What is this?" I had no idea what it was so I walked over to see.

There was a tiny brown tabby kitten in a cat carrier with a note. The note was obviously from my dad, but he wasn't at home. He had left the kitten there and went to his lakehouse for the night.

So, all I know is there is an adorable kitten in my kitchen named Roadside. I figured my dad found a kitten on the side of the road. I took Roadside out of the carrier and gave him a once over. The first thing I noticed is that he was covered in fleas.

I gave Roadside a bath with dish soap, because he seems like he may be too small for flea medication. He still had fleas on his face, so I did my best to get off as many as I could. He was very well behaved for his bath. When I started to dry him off with a towel, he started purring LOUD. My heart melted, you guys. He is too sweet!

I got to talk with my dad to see what the story was the next day. Apparently, my uncle found this kitten on the side of the road in the country. He's been fattening him up for about a week. (He eats voraciously, and purrs while doing so.) My uncle decided to bring him over to the nursery to become a barn cat. My dad brought him inside because he thought the kids would like to play with him. Roadside's been in my house ever since.

He's a very calm kitten. He likes to just sit next to you or on you while you pet him. I haven't seen him play yet, but want to offer him some catnip soon.

Callie seems pretty upset about him. She walks into the kitchen, looks at him, hisses, and then goes into my bedroom. She will growl and carry on if she's sitting in the same room as him. Callie used to live with another kitten in her old home and apparently acted the same way with that one. She got over it and they became best friends over time.

I've been wanting to have a kitten around, because who doesn't love kittens? I'll be talking to my dad about neutering and getting him vetted up.

For now, I'll leave you with a high dose of adorable. If you listen closely in the video you can hear some purring going on. And excuse Shiner's whining in the background.

  3. Squeee! Your dad reminds me of mine. He would do the same thing, I hope yours pays the vet bills! Hopefully Callie will come around. For the fleas, Bobbi Panter's Charile Dog Flea & Tick shampoo is all natural, when I worked with her a zoo actually called to say they bathed tiger cubs in it and the fleas disappeared. It's safe to use on the face and around the eyes too. If you want to try it I can see if I can get you a free bottle for a review. If not Amazon has it. Sandra

    1. Hmmm may have to check it out! His flea situation seems OK now. I just check him every day to make sure there aren't new ones and if I find any I take them off. I'll bathe him again if they get bad.

    1. Yea, I don't see that either. He might, but if he does I have a feeling he'll spend lots of time in the house.

  5. Kitten envy! I had foster kittens for 4 weeks and just returned them Friday (they were finally big enough for surgery). They were a lot of work and made a huge mess, but I do miss them! Enjoy the kitten cuddles. :)

  15. So cute; what a sweetie! When I was a tween a gray tabby ended up in our neighbourhood; bone thin and pregnant, she had a collar ring around her neck, so she'd obviously once been somebody's pet (I always figured her pregnancy was the cause of her showing up like that, the victim of irresponsibility and cruelty - but that's a rant I won't engage in today!) Anyways, she became ours and gave birth to seven kittens, after which we had her spayed. She (and the one kitten we kept) were the sweetest, most loving cats I've ever encountered. Kisses to Roadside!

  16. KITTENS!! :)

We have used frontline or advantage (regular) on kittens as young as a few weeks old. We just give a small portion of the dose. Both FL and Advantage are safe to use either the cat or the dog version, so if you have some for the dog, you could put a couple of drops on the kitten to help things out.

So happy he found the help he needed :)

    1. Yay kittens! I know some do that. Just me being a scaredy cat maybe. I do have some regular cat Advantage for the large cats. I thought about putting a drop on him. Now they do seem under control... but I still found one or two when I check.
