I didn't know what lepto was until my vet suggested we consider vaccinating Honey for it. We hike and play in a lot of wet areas and our vet thought Honey would be at a higher risk for it.

She's had no ill effect from the vaccine. And I trust my vet to give good advice. She knows I'm cautious about overvaccinating so we had a good talk about lepto.Pamela | Something Wagging This Way Comeshttp://www.somethingwagging.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6382480381687088490.post-66815744536137020222012-11-08T14:09:38.444-06:002012-11-08T14:09:38.444-06:00Yea, when I first started we did not vaccinate sma...Yea, when I first started we did not vaccinate small dogs with lepto. There was a kind of outbreak in Texas, so we started to do it more often. I was pregnant when I handled one dog with lepto. Of course my work made me go to the doctor. Unfortunately, pregnant women can't take doxycycline which is what they prescribe people who come into contact. They gave me cephalexin instead.AnnStaubhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09386132460741393276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6382480381687088490.post-3463968160199860232012-11-08T13:50:15.045-06:002012-11-08T13:50:15.045-06:00From Remy's mom (another RVT)

Parvo and distemper get a lot of attention, but Leptospirosis is a nasty disease too and far fewer people seem to know about it.

I think Leptospirosis vaccines lost favor because of the prevalence of bad vaccine reactions. Because Leptospirosis is bacteria, the proteins that had to be injected were much larger than those in viral vaccines. Larger proteins mean greater reaction risk.

But now they have developed new vaccine technology that allows for much smaller proteins to be used, thus a much safer vaccine.

Also, pregnant women should be especially cautious, as Leptospirosis can cause miscarriage.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6382480381687088490.post-1650811273647740412012-11-08T04:57:55.517-06:002012-11-08T04:57:55.517-06:00Thank you for the information.
