Remy ~ One Blue Dog

Today, I bring you a special interview with Remy from the "One Blue Dog" blog. Remy is a sweet boy who is estimated to be just over a year old. He blogs, tweets, and has his own Facebook page. He lives with his human parents in Orange County, California. Remy was a pleasure to interview. Keep reading to find out just how awesome he is.

Meet Remy!

So Remy, what type of dog are you?

I am a Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix…probably?

Is your name short for anything? Do you have any nicknames?

Well, my proper name is Remington, which is what dad calls me a lot. Mom calls me Remy, or Remy Roo, or Remy Bo Bemy, or muffin, monkey, sweet potato, crazy tomato – it’s a long list.

How did your human parents find you?

I got into some trouble and ended up in puppy jail. I even have a tough looking tattoo inside one of my ears! Mom was working as an RVT at the puppy jail, which is where she met me. She had been tempted to adopt a few other pups, but I was the one that she just couldn’t resist. I think it is because I crawled right into her lap the first time we met.

Do you live with any other pets?

Oh yes! I have two kitties named Linus and Schroeder. They kind of hate me, but at least they will share the couch with me now. And I have a nice little bunny named Artemis. She shares her hay and her poop with me, so we are good friends. I like to give her kisses on the nose.

What's your favorite snack?

Up until recently my most favorite treats were hot dogs. Mom saves them for special occasions, which means really tricky stuff. But yesterday I met a new treat named Bacon. Bacon is my new bestest friend!

What's your favorite thing to do?

Hmmm, it is hard to pick just one thing. I love cuddling with mom and dad when I am tired. I love playing fetch. But I think my most favorite thing of all is a really great play session with other pups, which includes a lot of chase and some wrestle mania.

Canine Good Citizen
I heard that you recently became a Canine Good Citizen. Congratulations! How do you feel about that?

I am really excited and kind of proud of myself. When I first came to live with my family, they said I have an excellent temperament, but I need to learn something called “impulse control.” That is hard to do! But I couldn’t have become a Canine Good Citizen without it. I still have a lot to learn, but this shows how much I have figured out in the last six months.

Why did you decide to start blogging?

There are a lot of other cool animals out there with really neat blogs, and people too. I thought, “Hey! That looks fun! And I love to have my picture taken, so this is perfect!” And now I have all kinds of cool buddies that I might have never met if I didn’t have my blog.

I also got to ask Remy's mom a few questions and learn a little more about the mom behind the dog.

Why did you decide to adopt Remy?

It was a combination of timing and cuteness. Well, more than that. The shelter I worked at was an hour and a half drive from home, so we really couldn’t have a dog while I was there. Remy happened to come into the shelter just as I was making plans to work closer to home. I had a special feeling about him as soon as we met. Amidst all the commotion of the shelter, he was calm and affectionate.

While every other dog in his dog “cottage” was barking wildly, Remy would be sitting at the front of his kennel looking pretty happy and relaxed for a pound puppy. He was also selected for a special program in which troubled kids learn to train dogs so that they might learn a greater sense of empathy and compassion for both animals and people. Remy got “excellents” on every single part of the behavioral assessment for the program. I was impressed!

It turns out that he was actually a little shut down in the shelter. He is certainly more excitable than that first impression led us to believe, but he is a very quick study and such a wonderful companion. He has brought so much happiness into our home.

Remy's just hangin' out
How long have you worked as an RVT and what do you do?

I have been working as a vet tech for over four years, but I’ve only been licensed for about a year. After leaving the shelter, I worked for a short while at a small animal clinic nearby, but it wasn’t the right place for me. I decided to leave and put my English degree to use doing freelance writing while I figured out where to go next. Shelter work is what I really love, but none of the shelters in our area have medical staff – they send everything out to nearby hospitals.

Now my husband and I are starting a small business together and I volunteer one or two days a week at a local clinic to keep my skills up and satisfy my need to do “tech stuff.” I would love to get back into shelter medicine in the future though.

How much do you help Remy with his blog?

I type it all up for him and handle Photoshop duty, but Remy is the boss when it comes to his blog. He comes up with all of the ideas and, of course, is more than happy to provide photo documentation.

Remy is one photogenic pup
