National Bird Day

January 5th is National Bird Day! What exactly is National Bird Day? According to NationalBirdDay.com, the following points are the reason for creating this day:

  • Birds have been a source of inspiration to human beings for a very long time.
  • 12% of the world's 9,800 species of birds face extinction. This includes 33% of the world's parrot species.
  • Birds serve as a valuable alert system in detecting global environmental changes.
  • Many parrots and songbirds face extinction due to illegal pet trade, disease, and habitat loss.
  • Raising public awareness and educating people about physical and behavioral needs of pet birds can help improve the welfare of millions of birds who are kept in captivity.
  • The survival of the world's birds depends upon educating others and supporting bird habitat conservation.

If you are considering having a bird as a pet, don't think it's going to be an easy task. Birds are very high maintenance pets. They require grooming, proper nutrition, good husbandry, lots of socialization, mental stimulation, play time, veterinary care, and much more. Did you know that some types of parrots can live to be over 50 years old? Are you ready for such a long commitment? Please be prepared!

Also, if you do decide to get a pet bird, you should adopt! That's right - there are plenty of birds out there who are looking for their forever homes. The Avian Welfare Coalition is a wonderful place to find a bird in need.

  3. Wow, I had no idea you could adopt a bird. Thank you for posting about it. We think we're going to stay a strictly mammal household for now, though. Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrs.

    1. Yup, you sure can MizzBassie! Especially since birds live so long, there are plenty for adoption. I once met a cockatoo who was adopted when she was about 40 years old. Unfortunately, she had once lived in the wild and had been captured when she was a young bird.

  7. Hey it's Jet here. Hi Miss Ann.

We did not know, either... however, we've tried to increase our local awareness of avians during our walks. We've written several posts about the wonderful creatures. In fact, this morning, Mom noticed our favorite red headed woodpecker was back on the neighbor's telephone pole!!!

  8. Sadly, birds are often bred in puppymill-like conditions, but we don't think of them as we do dogs and cats, so we turn a blind eye when stores like PetSmart sell them.

  9. We did not know there was a National Bird Day! We appreciate how tasty the birdies look...MOL! Mom thinks there is a local shelter where you can adopt birds and other small creatures as well as doggies and kitties.

  11. Granny and I haven't heard of Bird day either, but now we know. We like birds, I play with them sometimes, only to give them a boost, just for fun, you know. My mom adopted 2 little birds from the shelter last month and they're very happy and satisfied :)
