Florida
The Florida Panther is an endangered species that lives in southern Florida. It was declared the state's official animal in 1982. They are closely related to the Puma. It's a shame that these big cats are endangered because they are so beautiful!

Hmmm... any guesses as to what the official state cat in Maine is? Why the Maine Coon of course! These gentle giants are native to Maine. They were named the official state cat of Maine in 1985.

Maryland
Everyone should know this one by now. The Calico cat is the official state cat of Maryland and was named so in 2001. Last Monday, I wrote all about calico cats if you want to learn more about them.

Massachusetts
I think a lot of my kitty friends are going to want to pack up and move over to Massachusetts after reading this. The official state cat of Massachusetts is the Tabby cat! Apparently, the schoolchildren of Massachusetts requested that tabbies be named the official state cats back in 1988 and their wish was granted.

That's it for official state cats of America. Would you like to see more official state cats? What breed or type of cat would you nominate for your state?
Very cool...yet sad that there are only 4 states! :-( Hm, I'd say that the mountain lion should be the state cat of California!! Over half the state is natural habitat for them...and perhaps they would get more respect if they were given the title! :-D
ReplyDeleteWe agree sad it is only four. We have enjoyed these. Have a marvelous Monday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
I'm thinking Missouri's should be the bobcat. Amazed only 4 states have official cats!
ReplyDelete:) :) :) :) xx00xx
ReplyDeletemollie and alfie
Wow that was interesting ... wish all states would have an official cat ;o)
ReplyDeleteWait a minute, you did the "M's" and didn't include MICHIGAN???? Shame, shame!
ReplyDeleteI think Cody should be the official state cat of Michigan lol!
DeleteI would nominate the Barn Cat for Indiana. I imagine a few states would like this helpful little fellow to be their state cat.
ReplyDeleteI love knowing these state animals. I knew some but not others so it's fun to read about!
ReplyDeleteOink oink,
Katie and Coccolino the mini pig
One a gorgeous big cat and one of our favorites. Thanks for sharing this interesting info. Purrs and hugs from the kitties at www.thecatonmyhead.com, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
ReplyDeleteI guess me, Texas, could not be the cat of the state of New York?...
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing =^.^=

I would like to nominate the feral cat for the state of SC. But then that isn't a breed. It is fun finding out about the state cats. Wonder who is in charge of naming the state cat??
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.

I grew up so near to Florida and didn't knew there was a Florida Panther! :O I feel so ignorant!
ReplyDeleteI love our Florida Panthers (and not the hockey team that's named after them). It is such a shame that they are endangered because you are right, they are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI think the Jack Russel Mix should also be the state CAT of NJ!! Wait! What?? I'm not a cat!
ReplyDeleteLove and licks,
Cupcake
OMD, NJ doesn't have a state cat! What about dogs? I'll look at that next. We have state "everything else" we should have cats!
ReplyDeleteI think a tuxie rules!! ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat's up colleagues, how is the whole thing, and what you wish for to say regarding this article, in my view its in fact awesome in favor of me.
ReplyDeleteHere is my web-site - aaa fx
Well, I guess where we are from in South Carolina it would be the Clemson Tiger MOL!
ReplyDeletehmmmm, we aren't sure what cats to nominate. The issue is we don't know many breeds!
ReplyDeleteNJ should have the Tuxie or the leopard! I'm surprised Maine's cat isn't the Maine Coon. Hm, I thought it was the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
ReplyDeleteState kitties too? Cool! Although I do not think I would like to play with this Florida panther...
ReplyDeleteSad!! Only 4 state kitty cats!! I think the state cat of Texas should be the Ragdoll. They are big and beautiful like TX and the have TX hospitality. They are very sweet and loving and laid back like most Texans.
