Remembering Loved Pets on National Pet Memorial Day

Today is National Pet Memorial Day which falls on the second Sunday of September every year. On this day, remember and celebrate the lives of your past loved pets. Sometimes, it can be hard remembering pets who have passed away. There are several ways you can remember and celebrate their lives. Here are a few ideas.

  • Go through old photo albums and reflect upon all of the fun times you shared with your pet.
  • Share stories about your past pets with friends and family members. This can be helpful if you're still grieving.
  • If you buried your pet, visit their burial site and think about all the wonderful times the two of you shared together.
  • Donate to your favorite shelter or animal rescue in honor of your friend.
  • Plant a flower or tree in honor of your pet.
  • Volunteer at a local animal shelter in honor or your pet.

I've had fun looking at some photos of my past pets recently. I've already shared a little bit about some of my past cats, but have a few more past pets to share later this month as well. I think looking at photos of my past pets is a great way to remember them and remind me that they are not forgotten.

I also thought today would be a good time to talk about Paw Pods which is a company that I recently heard about. Paw Pods offer 6 sizes of pet burial pods that are eco-friendly. The pods are made from all-natural, biodegradable materials like bamboo and rice husk. The pods come in several sizes to accommodate a small goldfish or large sized dog. The pods also come with a seeded wildflower leaf that can be planted alongside a pet's burial place. Paw Pods also offers cremation urns for a pet's ashes.

Working as a veterinary technician, I've had the challenging duty of helping people's pets pass peacefully and safely. Learning about Paw Pods made me wish we had something like this available for pets where I worked. Many times, people would opt to bring their small pets home with them for burial after a euthanasia. It was always a challenge finding suitable boxes to send the little birds, hamsters, or lizards home in. I think Paw Pods would have been a perfect solution and a much nicer way of handling these difficult matters.

You can visit the Paw Pods website to learn more about their products. In honor of National Pet Memorial Day, Paw Pods is offering a 20% discount on products purchased online at their website today.

I hope that National Pet Memorial Day brings you special and fond memories of your old friends! Feel free to share your favorite memories with your past pets in the comments.

  1. Thank you Ann! I remembered Hammy, MC Hamster, all my fish and my cat Taiko today. I have very fond memories with each of them! ;0)

Thank you also for the information about the pods. Several years ago when my friend's dog passed away, she was devastated. She found a company that would take the dog's ashes and turn them into wearable stones. She had a necklace made from her dog's ashes that she treasures.

    1. Oh my gosh I love that hamster name! That is so cute! There are a few companies out there who will turn pet ashes into jewelry which is pretty neat.

  6. Thank you for letting us know about this day. Our mom misses Kitty a lot. Kitty was her first kitty, and she went to the Bridge several years ago due to kidney disease. She was a wonderful and sweet kitty, our mom says.

  12. Remembering our pets who have passed away can be difficult, but it usually brings back all the wonderful memories or their unique personalities.

Here's a thought that might be useful for your vet practice. When we took our pets in for euthanasia, I brought their favorite blanket or piece of fabric I had chosen that reflected their personality. After they were gone, I wrapped them in the fabric so they could be sent for cremation. I don't know if the fabric was actually cremated with them (I doubt it), but it was a way for me to prepare them, and myself, for their final journey.

Maybe you could do something similar for the clients. The practice could get several inexpensive animal print fabrics or solid colors to use as a wrap to send pets home in. I think it would be a thoughtful touch, and much nicer than trying to find some sort of box to put them in. Even several layers of tissue paper would work for the extra-small pets. We buried our hamster after wrapping her in several layers of pink tissue paper.

    1. We always offered soft blankets and towels if people did not bring them along. The boxes were only for small animals, as we saw a lot of them. Actually, I think right before I left we may have had some little coffin type things. We always made sure to position them carefully and wrap them nicely in paper towels inside the box. I think I like the tissue paper idea though.

My 2 previous bunnies Caramel and Thumper and my cat Smokey have all been buried in the bottom garden wear Speedy plays,I made special cardboard coffins for them after I brought them home,I cover a obx with pretty paper in side and out then place an old top that they were fond of inside and placed them in the box wraping them up in the box just like putting them to bed and then seal the box up and then we bury them in the garden,I cry my eyes out the whole time but it helps me say good bye to them with that final show of love,xx Rachel
