Stuff I Want to do With My Dog and Kids This Summer

Yesterday was the last day of school for my oldest human child, Lily. She'll be going in to the 4th grade now and we're excited that's summer here. I've got lots of ideas for things I'd like to do with my kids this summer, both human and furry.

Taking the dog to do things can be a challenge for my family though. We have one car, a Ford Mustang, which only seats four people and there are now exactly four humans in my family. So that means there is usually not room for the dog to come along sadly. Although, I'm not sure I could handle my terror of a 2 year old and the dog too.

Shiner at the lake in 2010.

The main thing I would really like to do this summer with my dog is take her back to our lakehouse. She hasn't been in a few years now since the birth of my 2nd daughter. When Violet came along, that meant no more room in the car for Shiner. I also haven't been out there in at least a year or two.

Shiner loved going to the lake though and diving for sticks and rocks. She used to actually dive underwater to fetch rocks if I threw them in the water for her.

Something that may be easier for us to do is visit the park next door and explore some of the trails there. They also have a lake, but I'm not sure if I feel comfortable letting Shiner swim in that one...

Another pet-related goal of mine for the summer is to find a pair of rats to adopt. I've had a few leads so far, but never have anyone to go with me to meet the possible adoptees. It's not safe for me to go alone since most inquiries are via Craigslist. I just put my own "looking to adopt" ad up that states that they have to come to me. We'll see how that turns out.

Nibblet.

In August, I hope to attend the Austin Pet Expo with Lily. I am not sure if I'll bring Shiner to this because she gets nervous around strangers and there are going to be tons of strangers around. When we attended last year, the place was packed. I'm sure this year will be no exception.

And I'll get to meet another blogger in person for the first time ever. Christy from Sassmuffins will be there as an exhibitor with her very cute pet beds.

At the Austin Pet Expo last year.

We'll also be going to Schlitterbahn again this year. If you've never been to Schlitterbahn before, I highly recommend it! It is the most awesome water park ever! We go at least once every summer because it's only about an hour south of us. We go to the original Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. As far as I know, it's not a dog friendly place. Although, I do think it would be cool to see a dog floating down the lazy river in an inner tube.

And being totally selfish, I'd love to do something without my kids at least once this summer. I love them, but it's been... well, I don't know how long it's been since I've had a "kid break" but I'm overdue for one.

My house an hour after I clean it...

I know summer will blow by fast, so hopefully we can enjoy it and have lots of fun in the sun. What are your plans for summer?

  2. I hope you can do all things you planned. I would like to stay in a lake house :o) We plan our first howliday since 2003, but I'm not sure if we can do it. Easy's dad has to avoid the sun for his c-thingy, so it's not easy to find a place... maybe a coalmine :o) Have a great caturday!

  3. sounds like you are going to have a great summer! So cool that you have a park right next door! Our plans this summer is for ME to listen to what I need more (as in taking time off from blogging and reading email which I began implementing yesterday). I am cutting down across the board and trying to actually have a LIFE! We hope to take Dakota to some fairs and parks........I need to spend more time with my family instead of always being stuck behind a computer screen! Enjoy!

    1. Yes, I need to do that too, but I started that about a month ago. But, I should probably play less video games too. Parks and fairs sounds like fun though!

  5. Luckily, we don't have any mini humans, so all the plans Mom makes are either for her or us :) Hope you have a wonderful summer!

  7. Maybe it's an idea to get Shiner his own car..after he passed his driver's licence test, of course ;) Granny and I were laughing about the picture of your little girl. My two-feet sister is also two years old and she knows how to change the house in a minute too..lol :D We hope you have a fantastic holiday and we're sure Nibbles will be with you too. Pawkisses :)

  8. I understand completely your sentiments about some "me" time. I encourage you to try and steal away some much deserved time just for "you" Trust me, you are not alone, I'm going to "run away" for three days next week. Let's keep in touch, and have a wonderful summer. PS: your daughter is adorable!

    1. The thing is that I don't like doing things alone either. It's kind of boring to me. But the only other person I have to do stuff with is my boyfriend. Finding a babysitter is close to impossible.

  9. We hear that!! Oh how our humans would love to get away, too! Our mom got an email from work while she was out at BlogPaws that began, "now don't freak out..." and proceeded to tell her the HUUUGE amount of work that had to be done by September. So much for vacations!!!

  10. Sounds like a fun list! I love water parks, we have a really nice amusement/water park here in Indiana called Holiday World. Our local pet expo is in November, and I always enjoy going to it. Hopefully you and Shiner can make it out to the lake this year.

  13. We so understand a kid break and nothing wrong with that. No plans here just to enjoy the Summer if we get a good one this year. Have a serene Sunday and let us all partake of some big easy today.
    Best wishes Molly

  16. Great list. Summer goes by so fast. Hope you get to do lots on your list.

  17. Listen closely—I think you should put the little one on your lap in the back seat and sit Shiner next to you or let her ride up front. That way both will be safe and Shinery will get to the lake.

    1. That's cray-cray CK! The lake is at least an hour away and the po-po's would pull me over in a heartbeat for that because they are crawling in Lakeway. Plus, I'm sure someone would call the police on us if they saw that lol. And it's way too dangerous, would never attempt it! I know I did all that when I was a little kid though.

  18. That's a pretty cool list you have there! We hope to take a few short trips, and get outside more.

  19. Sounds like you have some great plans!! I know how hard it is to take your dogs and kids to do certain things. We have the three huskies plus a couple kids BOL!!!! There are times we either have to only take one dog, or leave them all home and have my mom come dog sit for us. SOmetimes it's challenging.

    1. It is challenging! I could either go just me and Shiner, or leave the baby at home and take me Shiner and Lily... having a small car doesn't help much either.

  20. It sounds like you are going to have a great summer! We don't have a lot planned yet....sometimes we just like to "play it by ear". I definitely want to find a good place to take the dogs swimming though, and see how Luke likes it.
