9 Reasons Why Cats Make Great Pets | June is Adopt a Cat Month

June is Adopt a Cat Month. Really, it's the perfect time of year to promote cat adoption because so many kittens are born during the Spring and are looking for families to adopt them during this time. A need for kitten fosters is also prevalent during this time of year.

It shouldn't be hard to find a kitten or young cat to adopt from your local animal shelter or cat rescue, but don't forget that senior cats also have plenty of love to give as well. Plus, adopting a senior cat means they may already be mellowed out.

Regardless of the age of the cat you plan to adopt, they all need good homes and families to care for them. So in honor of Adopt a Cat Month in June, we are sharing 9 reasons why cats make great pets. Cats are said to have 9 lives after all. Of course, there are probably hundreds of reasons why cats make great pets but we'll stick to 9 for now.

  1. Cats are cute. 'Nuff said.
  2. Cats are very entertaining creatures. They are even fun to watch in their sleep.
  3. Purring. Is there anything more soothing than the purr of a happy kitty?
  4. Cats are easy to potty train.
  5. Cats are stress relievers. They just make you feel good.
  6. They rule the internet.
  7. Cats make great cuddle partners.
  8. You don't need to give them a bath. They usually take care of that themselves.
  9. Pet cats can live a long time. Sometimes 20 years or more.
If you are considering adopting a cat, please make sure you're ready first. This cat adoption checklist from the American Humane Association is a very useful resource. And if you're not sure where to find a kitty of your own, you can find plenty of them available for adoption at Petfinder

Help celebrate Adopt a Cat Month by sharing the news about just how wonderful cats as pets are! And let us know why YOUR cat is a great pet for you in the comments.

  1. We have never had a cat being dog people but we think all points above are good enough reason to have one. Have a tremendous Thursday.

  4. Great post and cats are definitely a welcome addition to any family. I'm allergic to cats but they were all over the streets of Rome and I couldn't help but adopt three and try to keep healthy a fourth day old kitty that sadly didn't make it.

  6. We like cats for being just there and enjoying our company instead to jump and to bark and to slobber on our pants. But on the other hand I would miss all that things what dogs do. A dog-cat or a cat-dog would be perfect. I hope a lot of people will take the chance to share their home and their heart with a cat in june.

  8. Mom was a total cat person that didn't even like dogs, then she turned into a crazy dog lady with cats on the side. Now she is not even sure she wants to have cats once our two are gone. For us they are a lot of work, get into everything, wake us up so very early. She does love them, but she says dogs are so much easier to have as pets. Maybe my cat bro Bert has soured her opinion.

  11. And cats are less needy than dogs (usually) so you can leave them home for a weekend or longer in some cases and they are totally fine.

I love cats. I hope I'm always able to have at least one. They make me laugh every single day.

  15. I have one more to add to your list--they're small.

As we think of moving aboard a boat, I'm considering adopting a cat. Honey loves cats and they don't take up much room.

I don't even want to think of sharing a tiny boat with TWO big dogs.

If you can keep them safe, they make great boat pets.

  16. Hmmm, no cats here Miss Ann...just me and dopey Corky the Amazon parrot. I am friends with cats though...if that counts for anything. Great post (for cat lovers) - BOL!

  17. A few weeks ago Dad said we could get a cat, our shelters here are overrrun with them. We still don't have a cat, mom wants one bad, she thinks we could keep each other company while she is in the hospital. Dad doesn't agree. Maybe we should get all the bloggers this month to bombard his email until he gives in? Love Dolly

  18. I have almost always had at least one cat since I was a teenager and we convinced my dad to let us take in two strays. I can't imagine being without one, though my hubby and I have said we may not get another one once the current two are gone. We love them so much, but just feel like they don't get the attention they deserve because of the dogs. I've thought maybe we would foster a mother cat and kittens or something....we'll see. Hopefully we won't know for a long time, Sam is only 12 so we hope she'll be with us for many more years!

  19. For me, cats are like Lay's potato chips -- you can't have just one. On several occasions, I have started out with just one, but they somehow wound up multiplying unexplainedly. When my youngest son was around six, we lived out in a rural area where there were a lot of strays, and since I just can't see a cat looking hungry without feeding it (this policy seems to extend to dogs and racoons...) I did. My tribe of kitties wound up numbering fourteen. More recently, we wound up sharing a studio apartment with nine furbabies. At the moment we only have one, a black and white Maine Coon mix rescue named Max (Maximus Fatticus Catticus),who is a complete nut job. We love him anyway!
