Introducing Jack and Gus - Rat Brothers

If you follow Pawsitively Pets on Facebook or other social media, chances are you've already heard the wonderful news. If not, I adopted two adorable rats on Sunday. I'm sure you're all eager to hear more about them, and if not I'm just eager to tell you!

I don't know too much about their history. The lady who I adopted them from brought them to me Sunday afternoon, and to be honest the story was a little confusing to me. All that mattered to me was that they needed a new home that I was willing to give.

Their names are Jack and Gus, like the mice in the famous Disney movie Cinderella. I didn't rename them and decided to keep these names. They are one year old and I'm not sure if they really are brothers or not. And they are big! Much bigger than Nibblet was, but she was a female rat.

Jack

Jack is an all brown or "agouti" dumbo-eared rat. Dumbo-eared rats have ears that stick out on the sides of their heads. He's pretty plump, and the larger of the two.

Gus

Gus is a grey dumbo-eared rat with a white spot on his forehead and white  fur on his underside.

Jack and Shiner

I'm still getting to know them, but they are both very friendly. Shiner also got to meet them and seems to like them. My 2 year old daughter  is absolutely in love with them and sits in front of their cage talking to them all day long.

Gus enjoying a nibble on Lily's pants.

I was kind of concerned about them at first because they had a little fight with each other a few hours after they settled in. But, later I noticed them sleeping together in their little house. Maybe they just had a disagreement about something. I plan to keep an eye on this, in case I need to separate them when they are arguing.

Jack napping in the window.

Since this is my first pair of male rats, I am noticing quite a few differences from females. These two seem very chilled out. After playing on the couch for a while, they both went over to the window sill and just napped there for several hours. Very different from Miss Nibblet, who never napped or sat still when I took her out to play.

So anyways, very happy to welcome these two into our home! Jack and Gus can't wait to share more of our lives together with you all!

  1. Oh now you have TWO of this funny guys! They are cute and they have wonderful eyes ( I don't know if people noticed that rats have really beautiful eyes, even the rats who live in nature). I'm glad Shiner like Gus and Jack too!

  17. Love the pic of nibbling on your daughter's pants!
Do you take them outside to play or do they only stay indoors?

    1. Well, I haven't had them long so we haven't gone outside. And I never did take Nibblet outside, but maybe I'll change that with these two. I need to get to know them better first though so I can make sure they wouldn't run off. I tried to put Nibblet's rat harness on them (it was too big for her) but they were too fat! lol

  20. Oh how exciting! I do not know a lot about pet rats, so I will be looking forward to more of your posts about these two. I think I've mentioned I had hamsters growing up. Rats seem smarter and more interactive to me, but I guess I just don't know!

Love the pic of Shiner! Such a sweet girl.

  23. Congratulations on your new family members! Boy rats are definitely more mellow than girl rats. I actually prefer the boys----I find them much more relaxing to be around. Jack and Gus look incredible sweet. So glad you adopted them! Looking forward to hearing the continued adventures. <:3~

    1. Thank you Jasmine! I have heard the same, and can totally see it. My girl rat would never lay down when she was out to play, but these two have no problem taking a nap on the window sill.
