5 Adoptable Senior Pets That Will Melt Your Heart

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. Senior Pets are awesome and make great companions for a number reasons. Here's a list of a few reasons why senior dogs make great pets. Our own dog, Shiner, is a senior dog at 11 years old even though she doesn't always act like it.

Sadly, senior animals are often overlooked for adoption at animal shelters because many families are looking for younger dogs. After years of loyalty and devotion to their humans, many pets are dropped of at the shelter because they are no longer wanted or their owners are no longer able to care for them. Imagine the heartbreak these cats, dogs, and other animals feel during this process.

One good place to find an adoptable pet is Petfinder where you can easily search for a pet you might be interested in. So in honor of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, I thought I would share 5 adoptable senior pets that are sure to melt your heart. All of these pets were found via the Petfinder website.

1. Norma Jean - Lago Vista, Texas

Norma Jean is an 8 year old American Staffordshire Terrier. She was surrendered to the Austin Animal Shelter by her family due to their HOA regulations. She's good with children, other dogs, and even cats! Norma Jean is missing a few teeth and has an underbite, but that makes her extra special. Plus, she doesn't really chew so you won't have to worry about her destroying furniture or other belongings. She is currently at Don't Bully Me Rescue in Lago Vista, TX. CLICK HERE to see her listing on Petfinder.

2. Spike - Seattle, Washington

According to his adoption profile, Spike is a relaxed and mellow 10 year old cat looking for his new forever home. He loves people, but needs to be an only cat. He might do well with a cat-friendly dog. For more information about adopting Spike, CLICK HERE.

3. Lucky and Hopscotch - Baton Rouge, Louisiana

These two lovely ladies are gerbils thought to be around 4 years old. Gerbils can live anywhere between 3-8 years old and since they are in good health, they should have many more years of love to give. They are both inquisitive, like to explore and friendly. They do not bite. For more information about adopting Lucky and Hopscotch, CLICK HERE.

4. Bad Boy - Sherman, New York

Sweet little Bad Boy is a Silver Marten rabbit thought to be about 7-8 years old. This poor guy may have had a rough life previously. Apparently, his old humans decided to tattoo something not so nice inside of his ear. Bad Boy does have some special needs in keeping his rear end clean, so potential adopters should be dedicated to a little bit of extra care! See his adoption profile HERE.

5. Mickey - Oregon City, Oregon

Mickey is a 4 year old senior ferret. She comes to her new home microchipped, has current vaccines, and a free vet visit. For more information about how to adopt cute Mickey, CLICK HERE.

If you are thinking about adding a new furry family member, consider adoption! And don't forget that senior animals make great pets too.

  8. Aw, all sorts of different senior animals! I think senior pets are the best. It just breaks my heart to see them sit in shelters...here in Iowa, we have an 11-year-old Golden with a sad past who has sat in the shelter for two years now - it kills me. If only more people thought like you and saw how wonderful seniors are! Sharing <3

  11. They're all so beautiful - thank you so much for sharing these lovely deserving pets. The seniors always break my heart - I couldn't imagine having to surrender an animal after so long. The senior years are when they really shine and become such loyal companions, too. To think so many seniors get passed by breaks my heart; when I do adopt again I'm going to go with an older dog for sure. Not only do I get to miss out on the horrible puppy stages but I know I'll end up with a grateful companion as well.
