Cat Mischief

I hadn't planned on a post for today, but someone made a bit of mischief last night. Since it's "Mischief Monday", I figured it would be a fitting blog post for today. You see, Callie decided to have a little adventure...

Earlier in the day, I had opened the window for Callie to have some good bird TV. She loved it! There were lots of birds to watch and even a bunny that hopped by. The bunny really got her going and she got super excited.

I took this photo earlier in the day before Callie's adventure.

Later that night around 1 am, I went in the living room to shut the window. When I reached over to close it, I noticed a cat-sized hole in the screen. Uh oh... my heart sank because I knew Callie was outside.

Cat-sized hole in window screen.

I did a quick search of the house and didn't find her in any of her usual spots, so I grabbed my cell phone for the flashlight on it and began to search outside for her. I started by looking in the bushes and under the porch near the window she had escaped from. Then I started looking other places.

For those of you who don't know already, my yard is BIG. It's almost 4 acres and there are a lot of structures including a barn, an office building, 5 large greenhouses, a butterfly house and lots of other stuff. My family owns a garden center. So, that means there are LOTS of places for a cat to hide.

Some of my yard. My house can barely be seen in the far right corner.

With no luck after about an hour of searching and calling, I decided to open some stinky canned food and placed it on the porch in case Callie decided she was hungry. I left the front door open too. My phone was dead so no more flashlight for me.

I told my boyfriend that I hadn't found Callie, so he went and found an old flashlight and took it upon himself to go searching. We would have both searched, but one of us has to stay inside with our 3 year old daughter. The Cat Daddy went searching for about an hour too. I was beginning to really worry that she had wandered off far away...

I was in my bedroom, and decided to go into the kitchen for a drink. When I went through the laundry room, which leads to the backdoor, there was Callie on the steps outside looking at me. I picked her up, called out to the Cat Daddy to come inside, and put Callie in the kitchen. I shut the window tight and closed the front door.

#SorryNotSorry. Resting after a fun adventure.

Callie was feeling very frisky after her little adventure outdoors. Lesson learned about Miss Callie - no windows open without close supervision. And now, I'm even more convinced that I need to go buy her a harness sooner than later so she can get some safe outdoor time. I'm just glad that she didn't travel far and is safe inside now.

  3. I know what you mean by needing close supervision. They really love to go outside.

Sorry Callie gave you such a fright!

  4. Glad Callie's adventure had a happy ending.

A house in my neighborhood has an outdoor, cat enclosure. It has screening on all sides and a tree growing up through the middle. Perhaps Callie needs one of her own.

  5. Whew, close call. M here: Mario tore part of our patio door screen his first year with us, and we didn't catch it until I saw him outside rounding the corner. Fortunately, he was easy to catch as he was just moseying around sniffing and patrolling. Now I'm ever watchful of open windows and doors - always checking the screen to see if it's getting loose. I'm so thankful Callie came home.

    1. Me too! I should have shut the window earlier, but she was having such a good time with all of her window whiffies. Definitely learned my lesson!

  11. They do make window screen material that is scratch proof. You may want to try that on windows you want to have open. Taking her out will only want to make her go out more. Once a cat has a taste of it and a good experience it gets very hard to keep them in.

    1. I'll have to look into that for a replacement screen. Unfortunately she has already had lots of tastes of the outdoors a lot in the past. Her other momma said she likes to go outside with them, but her yard was much smaller and probably easier to manage her in that one. Plus, she had a recent escape maybe 1-2 years ago where she went missing for a week :(

  12. That is really scary! Milita escaped on me once when she was very young. I no longer leave windows open without supervision, either. I'm glad that she came back and is okay.

  14. Oh I'm glad she realized she's got it made at her home so she may wander but knows to return for good meals and nice sleeping spots!! Sam and I have wonderful walks with him on a harness and I feel good knowing he's at the end of the leash.......HAHAHA Good luck with Callie the Explorer!

  15. We're so glad Callie is safe and sound! Samantha escapes from time to time and we can't always find her. I've had more than one sleepless night because of it, but she has always shown back up the next morning. She can actually push through our screens sometimes, but most of the time she escapes it's because she runs by the dogs when they're going in or out.
I imagine this won't be your last cat mischief post! :)

  16. My cat Scout is also an indoor cat and he pushed his way through a screen door one time while staying at my parents' house in Wisconsin. They were pet sitting him for me. They were so worried because they have a family of bald eagles with a nest in their yard but thankfully Scout was found hanging out under the deck.

  17. Oh my gosh! I am so glad you finally found her! Ma would've been in a panic, for sure. I think she would probably love to walk with a leash and harness outside!

  18. I too had a cat go through the window.. actually she went several times, which was quite amusing as she never went very far, but I think she wanted to tell the neighbor cat what for and then couldn't figure out how to get back in.

  19. Haha! Well, I am still learning Callie so I'm glad she didn't go too far. I just didn't know what to expect from her. I thought it could have been possible she'd made a trek back to her old house which isn't far from here. Probably less than a mile. Still much farther than I'd want her to travel.. That window would have been to high for her to jump back into.

  21. What an ordeal, I am glad she is OK.

  22. OMG you had to be TERRIFIED!!! You are right, with all of that land and the nursery and all, there were thousands of places she could have hidden.
I think I read once that there are screens that cats can't tear....I never looked into it but it might be worth checking out!

    1. Ugh yes... I didn't know what to expect from her, like how far she would go. Someone else mentioned the scratch proof screens, so I'll look into that for a replacement. Just bought a harness. Think I'll test it out tomorrow :)
