Shelter Dogs Celebrate Birthdays for DOGust with a 1-800-PetMeds® Sweepstakes

Many pets who are adopted from a shelter have an unknown history, including the date of their birth. Dog parents with adopted shelter dogs will sometimes pick a date to celebrate their canine companion's birthday. Birthdays are special after all and every doggy likes to celebrate with extra love and treats.

Since most shelter dogs' actual birth dates are unknown, North Shore Animal League America created DOGust. August 1st has been known as DOGust since 2008. DOGust is a universal birthday for shelter and rescue dogs everywhere!

Shiner was not adopted from a shelter or rescue organization, but I still consider her a rescued dog. I found her tied up in an alley where she had been living when she was a puppy. She was living in the alley behind an apartment complex because her owners could not keep her in the apartments. We were also led to believe that she may have been used for dog fighting if I had not rescued her from that alley.

I don't know her real birthday, so I usually use an estimated birth date to celebrate her birthday. Shiner is happy to also celebrate DOGust with all the other shelter and rescue dogs out there. And to all the pets out there with unknown birth dates, we wish you a very Happy DOGust Birthday!
