National Guide Dog Month | Natural Balance Honors Human-Canine Teams That Make Us Believe

September is National Guide Dog Month. A Guide Dog is a dog that is trained to lead and assist people who are blind. It is difficult to imagine trying to get around without being able to see anything. Guide Dogs help their humans in so many ways.

To celebrate National Guide Dog Month, I am partnering with Natural Balance and Guide Dogs for the Blind to recognize some amazing top human-canine teams. These nine teams are outstanding examples of the amazing partnerships possible between humans and canines.

Meet Melissa and Camry

Melissa Hudson began to go blind in her late 20s. Being diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at age 3, Melissa was at risk of losing her sight at a very young age. She began to notice that she could not see well during college. As her vision continued to deteriorate, her doctor told her, "Melissa, you need to face the facts, you're going blind." She was only 27 years old.

The hardest step after hearing the shocking news was to accept that she would now need to use a cane to get around. When Melissa finally accepted her new reality, she decided to apply Guide Dogs for the Blind. Guide Dogs for the Blind is a non-profit charitable organization that raises and trains exceptional guide dogs to serve the blind and visually impaired.

Melissa is now on her third guide dog named Camry. Camry is beautiful, black Labrador Retriever. Melissa's mobility and independence have been enhanced with the help of Guide Dog, Camry. New found freedom shines through her countless adventures with Camry.

The two of them have traveled to three continents together including North America, Europe, and Asia. Camry is with Melissa every step of the way. From helping her navigate through the chaotic streets of Los Angeles to dodging skateboarders, Camry and Melissa tackle each new obstacle like professionals. Together, the two are ready to conquer the world!

To help people like Melissa thrive, please consider donating to Guide Dogs for the Blind. You can also read about the eight other amazing and inspiring human-canine teams while you're there. There's no better time than National Guide Dog Month to show your support for these incredible people and their four-legged superheroes.
