Trying Doggy Acupuncture for the First Time

Early one morning last week, Shiner woke me up with some strange behavior. She's never acted like this before and it really gave me quite the scare. I had no idea what on earth was wrong with her.

I woke up because she kept jumping on and off the bed. She does this sometimes, so I just figured she was trying to get comfortable and went back to sleep. But she wouldn't stop doing it, so I started watching her more closely.

For two hours, she jumped on the bed, laid down, got up a few seconds later, jumped down, laid down, got up a few seconds later... she would not stay in one spot for more than a few seconds. She finally fell asleep - I think from exhaustion - but she didn't look very comfortable. So I took her to the vet. She needed her ear recheck anyways, and this was some really unusual behavior.

Shiner's vet thought that she may have some back pain and decided to prescribe a few medications. She also offered acupuncture. She is working on her acupuncture certification and I figured it couldn't hurt to try.

Shiner has never had acupuncture before, but did really well for it. The vet inserted a few tiny needles in various places all over her body. Shiner was allowed to walk around the exam room with the acupuncture needles. After about 10 minutes, the vet removed the needles.

Thankfully, Shiner hasn't done the weird restless behavior again since that day.

Did the acupuncture work? I think it did. While Shiner was supposed to have taken her pain medication longer, I stopped giving some of it shortly after our visit because she seemed completely normal. In fact, for a few days after she received the acupuncture she seemed a bit more energetic and brighter than usual.

Acupuncture is something I would definitely let Shiner have again! I am glad she is back to normal now and hoping she doesn't act up again.

Has your pet ever had acupuncture before? Do you think it helped them?

  1. Glad it worked...hugs to you Shiner :o) I think there are a lot of possibilities with using accupuncture... it's just so darned hard to find a vet who is familiar with the needles...

  2. Ahh poor Shiner :( We've never tried it but know people who swear by it for them, so why not for our pups? I think Titan would have a definite issue with this. LOL

Hope Shiner girl feels better soon!

  5. Sydney gets acupuncture and she loves it. LOVES IT. She practically crawls in her vet's lap and falls asleep during a session.

I'm glad that the acupuncture helped Shiner.

  8. We've had acupuncture suggested to us a few times but so far the chiropractor has done the trick. We are open to acupuncture though if needed.

  9. That's so good to know that acupuncture worked for Shiner. Too bad not all vets are or offer acupuncture.

  14. So glad it worked! I've heard good things about acupuncture, and I'm definitely a believer of staying away from synthetic meds where possible and going for more "natural" solutions. So hard when our babies are sick or in pain. *Hugs* for Shiner!

  15. WE think this is awesome and so glad Shiner is feeling better. It stands to reason that it could help pets since so many clinical trials have proven the effectiveness of acupuncture on humans!!!

  16. We're so glad to hear this worked for Shiner! You're lucky to have a vet that is doing this. We don't have anyone in our area.

  17. Good that Shiner feels better! We never tried acupuncture, so it's hard to have an opinion. Judging by the previous comments, it seems to work on some dogs and even be pleasurable for some. But it makes sure sense to try if it can replace medication.
