One of Shiner's favorite things to do is to go to her dog bed where I keep her toys and pull her favorites out. And she of course has her preferences. There are 3 dog toys in particular that are her favorites and have stood the test of time with her.
Hurley Dog Bone
Shiner got her first toy by West Paw Design last year and we both really liked it. It was a Bumi Tug Toy, but sadly she didn't get to play with it long before it got lost in the yard somewhere. One reason I don't like for her to bring her toys outside is because she never brings them back in.

I love this toy! |
At Christmas, Shiner got another West Paw Design toy - the Hurley Dog Bone. This dog toy is the only toy I've ever given her that she hasn't been able to put a scratch on. She's chewed on this thing almost everyday since she got it and it's still in it's original shape and form. I have found no chunks of this toy torn off on the carpet ever. It's not a hard plastic but more of a rubber type dog toy.
The Hurley Dog Bone is definitely one of her favorite dog toys. Sometimes, it ends up behind the couch and she lets me know that she wants me to get it out for her.
Antler Chews
Back in November, Shiner tried an antler chew for the very first time. The antler chew we tried was from Peak Antler Company and it's a big hit around here. Shiner chews on her antler multiple times a day. It is finally starting to wear down now, but it will be several months I think before it's dwindled down to nothing.

Waiting to try it out for the first time. |
We did try an antler chew from another company that was split down the the middle with the marrow exposed before too. This antler was much smaller than our Peak Antler Company chew and it only lasted maybe an hour. I had to throw it away after that because it became too sharp afterwards. So therefore I recommend finding an antler chew that is left in it's entirety if possible.
Skineez Stuffingless Dog Toy
The Skineez Stuffingless Dog Toy was a big surprise. Honestly, I thought it would last a day at the most. True, it's seen it's share of destructiveness and is in pretty bad shape but it's still kicking. This toy did come with a squeaker inside which was promptly removed, of course. But, it didn't have any stuffing inside - it's a stuffingless dog toy.

Happy dog playing with her Skineez Platypus dog toy. |
Shiner likes to toss her Skinneez around all the time and plays with this toy every day. Two months for a soft toy is a REALLY long time in this house. I'm not sure how much longer it will last, but it's definitely a good choice of a soft dog toy for a hardcore chewer.
I haven't found a replacement platypus, but there are several other Skinneez Stuffingless Dog Toys on Amazon, like this cute fox.
So these are our 3 favorite dog toys for hardcore chewers and destructive dogs. Just thought I'd share because I know how challenging it can be to find a good toy for dog that like to chew. Let us know your dog's favorite toys in the comments!

Wow those do look like some hard core chewers for Shiner! We've never had big chewers before but those seem like great recommendations.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE West Paw Design toys. I am slowly trying to get them all for Buster, lol! The Hurley has held up SOOO well. We also just got an awesome frisbee made by them that he loves that is holding up phenomenally. Buster loves new antlers, but after a few chew sessions he's not interested in them anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check the frisbee out I bet that Shiner would love one. Shiner still hasn't gotten tired of her antler, but I've heard that many dogs do. One tip that was suggested for antler boredom was to soak it in broth for a while and then give it back to him.
DeleteCompletely agree about West Paw! So far we have tried the Hurley, the Bumi and the Tizzi and they are all excellent! So durable and uniquely shaped!
DeleteWell, we did find our Bumi in the yard the other day and she loves it! But she was able to shred a few pieces off of that one.
DeleteThat's a post for me today, huh? Thanks Shiner&Anne :o) I would like to try antlers, but my mom is afraid I could hurt my teeth. Is that possible or is my mom just overcautious? btw: I had my Skineez for more than 3 months, that's a lot :o)
ReplyDeleteIt is possible, so tell your mom not to feel bad if she doesn't give you one! Any hard toy like that could definitely break a tooth. You had a Skineez too?! That is such a long time for a soft toy... hopefully Shiner's lasts that long.
DeleteThat does look like a whole lot of fun chewy time!
ReplyDeleteHarley isn't much of a chewer, the only thing he's ever excited about would be a Greenie dental treat. Leo on the other hand is head over paw in love with is Acadia Moose Antler, he chews on that daily. Shriner looks happy with all three of his toys.
ReplyDeleteOh I have heard some good things about those Acadia antlers too!
DeleteThe skineez and the antlers are a fan fav around my house. The antlers last forever, plus they are super healthy for them to chew as it helps with plaque on their teeth and so much more. The skineez they love to tear the squeakers out of, but as you said, because they have no stuffing, it doesn't matter, they can just keep on chewing them!
ReplyDeleteღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
I've never given Ace an antler chew. This is something I should try. He's not a hard-core chewer, but he still loves to chew. I agree, the Platypus toy is surprising! I know some dogs who destroy every toy they get, so I will have to recommend that one.
ReplyDeleteSage loves to chew on her antler also. It's become a ritual to do it as her breakfast and dinner are being prepared.
ReplyDeleteSheba lives to destroy everything too! We love the West Paw toys, and I'll have to try the Skineez. Another one we like is Damien's Best dog toys. They are rope toys hand made in VT. We've had some for over two months and even though they are reaching the end of their lives, they lasted much longer than most other toys.
ReplyDeleteShiner does love rope toys, but they get shredded so super fast so I'll have to check that brand out.
DeleteJan K thanks so much for the recommendation! For a big chewer I would suggest an Ava style toy or rope ball.
DeleteThanks,
Mark (toy maker) at Damien's Best Dog Toys.
You're welcome, Mark! I'll be placing another order soon!
DeleteI couldn't wait to read this! Me being a hardcore chewer and all. I haven't heard of the Hurley bone before we will have to check it out, mostly to make sure I won't try to bury it. I liked antlers for a bit but prefer my Nylabones over them. They don't last forever but we like that so I get bored. The Platypus sounds interesting too! Thanks! Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteThis is such a perfect post for me to read. My dogs are hardcore chewers as well. Antlers are always in use here, but I need to check out that Hurley toy. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI am so sharing these with friends who are hardcore chewers - ty!
ReplyDeleteWe have antlers lying around the house that we pick up and chew on occassion. The stuffingless toys don't work as Bailie shreds them, she does better if they are full of stuffing.
ReplyDeleteDo you know that Dakota is one of the ONLY dogs I know that absolutely HATES HATES HATES the antlers? He wants no part of them. That first bone looks somewhat interesting but if it is like the one that Nyla has, Dakota wouldn't like it. The only bone that he likes that isn't "real" (other than dental bones), is the rough-coated Nyla bone. That one he LOVES! It has more of a "bone-like" texture.
ReplyDeleteShiner had a Nylabone like that years ago that she loved too.
DeleteWe have the Skineez platypus that we chose for our first PetBox in January. Without a doubt, it's Bentley's favorite toy. It still has one workable squeaker and has been loved and played with every single day. We have never had plush toy last like this. I wrote the company and told them how great it is. When ours dies, I will buy another one immediately.
ReplyDeleteSo glad Bentley likes his!
DeleteGoodie, chewy things! But cats aren't that into bones... but fun for the puppers!
ReplyDeleteNoodle
We have some serious chewers over here. We'll have to give these a try!
ReplyDeleteI can't recommend anything but good to know what to recommend now if anyone I know has a dog that's rough on toys. My girl Gracie is so good with her toys. Loves the squeaky ones and in fact will sometimes drive you...squeaky, squeaky, squeaky, nut...squeaky, squeaky...nuts with them...squeaky. So guess I am lucky! Her favorite toy, though, is definitely her hard red Kong toy. If she were ever to loose that thing late in the evening we might have to rob a pet store at midnight!!
ReplyDeleteShiner's just not that into squeaky toys. So I guess maybe that's good for me! lol
DeleteBeamer's antler was one of the best purchases I've made!
ReplyDeleteshe's just full of beans,xx rachel
ReplyDeleteThanks for the well wishes for Speedy,I'm glad to say he is back to his normal sel like nothing happened,xx Rachel
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas for hardcore chewers. We love our antlers that Sarge sent us. Have a fabulous Friday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
The elk antlers are great, although I find Jack loses interest after a few days - do you see that too?
ReplyDeleteI personally don't have that problem. But I've heard lots of people say that. Some have said to soak the antlers in a broth overnight and then the dogs should like them again!
DeleteThese are all great choices... we have 'power chewers' in our house, and the antlers are our #1 favorites. Our crew love them in all shapes and sizes, but if you choose an antler that has a reasonably large, rough (cut) edge your dog can get to the 'tasty' part more easily.
ReplyDeleteI wish the Skineez lasted a bit longer, but you're right, for a soft toy they do hold up pretty well.
We have the best luck with antlers, but even those don't last long.
ReplyDeleteOurs has lasted forever! It's really big though.
DeleteThanks for the tips. You just added 2 toys to our shopping list!
