Spring Cleaning Checklist for Pet Parents

This post is sponsored by Spot Shot® Instant Carpet Stain Remover and Spot Shot® Pet Instant Carpet Stain & Odor Eliminator. Pawsitively Pets only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers.

The time for Spring cleaning is upon us, and pets offer a variety of messes and smells that ultimately need to be dealt with. We all love our pets and want the very best for them. Offering a safe and clean environment is a good way to keep them healthy and happy. Why not tackle the cleaning chores for your Spring cleaning?

Here's a checklist on a few household pet items you might want to tidy up during your Spring cleaning this year.

1. Wash the pet bowls

While you should wash your pet's bowls regularly anyways, a deep clean every now and then doesn't hurt. (And if you aren't washing your pet's bowls, please do!) You can soak them in a mixture of 50% water and 50% vinegar or run them through the dishwasher.

I typically recommend stainless steel or glass feeding bowls for pets. They are not porous and cannot harbor germs as easily as plastic bowls. If you are using plastic feeding bowls for your pets, check their condition and consider buying new ones.

2. Clean out the toy box

This is a task I do every now and then and I do have to unfortunately toss a few things out. Go through your dog or cat toy box and check for any toys that may be damaged beyond repair. Broken toys can pose a threat to your pet's safety and health. Toss out any toys that are no good anymore. The rest can be washed and cleaned.

3. Deep clean the litter box

Cats typically prefer their litter box to be clean. While cat parents should scoop daily, the entire box should also be cleaned out occasionally. Washing your cat's litter box monthly is a good rule to follow. During your Spring cleaning chores, give the litter box a really good scrubbing. If the box seems like it may need to be replaced, go for it.

4. Pet beds and blankets

When is the last time you gave your pets' bedding a good wash? Now is your chance! Toss your pet's bedding in the washing machine to get rid of any unwanted odors, extra fur, and yes - bugs. With Spring comes bugs, such as fleas, and washing their bedding regularly can help minimize them.

5. Go through your pet supplies

I have so many pet supplies that I regularly need to go through them. I check for expiration dates and toss out any bad treats or food. Gather up any extra supplies that you aren't using and aren't going to use and donate them to  your local shelter or rescue group. Free up some space!

6. Spot clean your carpets

Still got that stain on the carpet where Fluffy lost his lunch last month? Add spot cleaning your carpets to your Spring cleaning checklist. Our favorite product for cleaning tough pet carpet stains is Spot Shot® Pet Instant Carpet Stain & Odor Eliminator.

Spot Shot Pet is safe for pets, kids, and the environment when used as directed. It's non-toxic, contains no phosphates, has recyclable packaging, and is not tested on animals. It eliminates carpet stains and anti-resoiling agents protect your carpet to keep stains from coming back. You can find a nearby retailer that sells Spot Shot HERE.

  1. That's a darn good list and we're pretty much on schedule!

  2. Great checklist! Do you know how well Spot Shot works at removing urine odor? The reason I ask is because we have puppies at the house year round and are constantly working on potty training which equals accidents in the house. We've tried several different cleaning products with our puppies, but we're always on the look out for a good pet stain/odor remover.

  3. We, or rather Claire does it monthly. Purrs

  4. When it comes time to tackle spring cleaning, some of us break out the colored markers and make family chore wheels, and some of us start to make a mental list of how much we can get away with not doing.
