Nibblet's Trip to the Vet

If you follow us on Facebook or other social media, you might have seen that Nibblet hasn't been feeling well the past few days. Late Saturday night, I went to feed her a treat and noticed that she fell over when she went to put her front paws on the cage bars. After watching her for a minute, I decided she was pretty wobbly.

I took her out of her cage and gave her a little exam, being sure to check out her ears. Her right ear had some yucky brown stuff in it and it seemed itchy. Sometimes, rats get ear infections and they can get wobbly from them. Sort of like they are walking drunk.

In the waiting room ready to see the doctor.

On Monday, I took her in to a vet clinic that I had never been to before. I decided to take her to White Rock Veterinary Hospital in Pflugerville, Texas because I used to work with and am very good friends with 2 of the receptionists there as well as one of the veterinarians, Dr. Lisa Schroeder.

Dr. Lisa is Shiner's favorite veterinarian and when I worked with her, she didn't really see any exotic pets. But, she made a special exception for Nibblet and had one of their expert small mammal doctors look at her too. She also gave me a full tour of the clinic and it's so super nice! This is a great veterinary hospital to take your small mammals or reptiles. They do not see birds, however.

They are trying to get me to come work there, but child care and transportation are an issue at the moment that prohibits me from going back to work as a vet tech.

Time for my cold medicine!

Anyways, back to Nibblet. She does have an ear infection and she also has a respiratory infection. So I am giving her ear drops and oral antibiotics. If her respiratory problems do not get better soon, she may need to take an additional oral anitibiotic.

I've moved her food and water down to the lower section of her cage because it seems like she's having trouble climbing to the top and is mostly hanging out on the first floor right now.

I don't like these ear drops!

Nibblet has been very good about taking her medicine so far but doesn't seem like much of a fan of the ear drops. After I put them in, she scurries away pretty fast. I will try to keep everyone updated on Nibblet's status. You can keep up with us on any of the social media sites by clicking those social media icons in the top right part of our sidebar.

  13. Hope she is starting to feel better after the new meds. Ear infections (and respiratory) are no fun for anybody. And hopefully, if it is what you want, you can perhaps work for this vet clinic in the future. It certainly was nice for them to give you a full tour while you were there with Nibblet!

  17. Bubbles, Dozer, Cuddles, Honey-Bear, Nipper and I, ALL send our heartfelt "get well" wishes to little Niblet, and I'm sure that with the meds, he'll fare quite well. Trust me, not one of mine appreciates having ear drops or even getting ears cleaned. They tend to walk around with ears flattened and a scowl on their face afterwards, for a while, until they finally accept the fact that it was done for their own good to stave off any infection. Then we're all friends again. Love to Niblet from all of us here. Hugs and kisses. Val and Bubby and the boys

  20. Oh no! Every time Ma is "busy" and we are not around much, something happens and we miss it. I had no idea Nibblet wasn't feeling well, Miss Ann (I blame Ma). I sure hope that the medicine helps her get better soon. She seems like a very good patient but it could also be that you are just that good at veterinary care!
