Happy National Mutt Day!

The term "mutt" refers to a dog that is a mixed breed. Most mutts were created as "accidents", which is why you can easily find a mutt to adopt at any local pet shelter. That's why it's important to spay and neuter your dog. National Mutt Day is celebrated on July 31st and December 2nd. Yep - mutts are lucky pups because they get a special holiday all to themselves not once but TWICE a year.

National Mutt Day is about honoring our furry mixed breed friends and spreading the word that they make great pets. Not having a pedigree doesn't make them any less lovable. After all, it's just a piece of paper right?

In fact, mutts can perform the same tasks that many purebred dogs can do. They are just as intelligent and make good service dogs, therapy dogs, drug and bomb sniffing dogs, and they are great at being your average household pet.

And if you're looking for a dog that's unique and unlike any other dog, Mutts are perfect. They come in all sizes, shapes, colors, fur textures, and patterns.

I have heard many times that mutts have less health problems than purebred dogs. According to DogTime, the reason mutts are considered healthier is because they have a bigger gene pool to draw from. So essentially, producing a mixed breed dog is the complete opposite of inbreeding.

To all of our mutt friends out there, here's to a very HAPPY National Mutt Day! And if you don't have a mutt yet, consider adopting one from your local animal shelter!

If you have a mutt, we'd love to hear about them. Share your mutt in the comments!

  9. Mom's first dog Trine was a mutt from the Humane Society, a 100 lb Black Lab, Newfie mix. I think she was some kind of a saint the way everyone talks about her. Mom has no issues with mutts, even though right now we are all purebreds.

  13. Uh-oh, our mutt Luke is not going to be happy with me for forgetting this day! Thank goodness it happens twice a year, I'll have to make up for it in December!
Our first two dogs were mutts, then we ended up with purebreds, only one was intentionally, it just happened that way. We were happy to get another mutt when we got Luke!

  17. I love mutts! Most of the dogs in my life were mutts. The most recent mutt was Sephi. Half Chow and a mixture of Lab, Shepherd, and who-knows-what-else. The current mutt is Pierson. He's most likely half Border Collie and half Australian Shepherd.
