One vital part of small pet care and husbandry is the type of bedding that you use. There are several options available today, but the one that I personally recommend is paper bedding.
I'm pretty excited today because we get to do our first ever review of a product that is made for small pets! As most of you know, I am passionate about proper care for small pets and just love the little critters in general. Jack and Gus are also happy to have their special time in the spotlight for once.
Carefresh sent us a bag of their new Carefresh® Complete Natural Paper Bedding to try out. We also have some to give away! I don't typically use a disposable bedding for the bottom of Gus and Jack's cage but instead use towels or blankets. My last rat, Nibblet, did use Carefresh, however, because her first cage was a little different.
I used to assist a Small and Exotic Pet Veterinary Specialist when I was working as a Veterinary Technician. When people wanted to know what kind of bedding to use for their small pets, our recommendation was always paper bedding - Carefresh Paper Bedding, specifically. Because this is a product that I already know and love, I'm happy that I get to share it with my readers as well.
For Jack and Gus, I prepared a cardboard box with plenty of Carefresh, added some treats, and waited to see what they thought of it. There's a video below, but they seem interested in doing other stuff. Typical for them when they are having free time outside of their cage. But hey - they are cute!
Now, every time I go to check on the boys in their home I spot them snuggling together in their box of Carefresh Complete. They love it and it's great for them to nest and play in.
So why is this new Carefresh Complete so special?
- 10-day odor control - The new Carefresh Complete has an Odor Stop Formula that has been proven to suppress ammonia odors for 10 days.
- It's 3 times more absorbent than wood shavings, which means your small pet stays cleaner and dryer.
- 99% dust free - Very important because small pets have sensitive respiratory tracts. And good for humans too.
- Good for your pet and the planet - Carefresh Complete is designed with specially for small mammals, made from 100% sustainable and renewable paper fibers. It's also biodegradable and compostable.
- Made in the USA.
What kind of small pets is Carefresh Complete Natural Paper Bedding suitable for? There's quite a few. The label shows a picture of a gerbil, rat, mouse, hamster, rabbit, and guinea pig.
Also available are Carefresh Custom Guinea Pig & Rabbit and Carefresh Custom Hamster & Gerbil. These blends are specially created to fit the individual needs of different types of small mammals.
Wondering where you can buy Carefresh paper bedding from? They have a handy store locator here. I put my city's name in and it looks like both Petco and PetSmart in my area carry it.

how cozy! i wish they had more options when I was keeping rodents years and years ago. The only options were cedar and pine. I'm glad they have something nice for them now and I would definitely use it if i still had rats. - Alana.

ReplyDeleteInteresting - I learned something today! Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI've mostly used Carefresh for my dwarf lionhead bunny, ,occasionally I've bought the National Geographic coconut and lavender blends to mix for a treat. I've learned my lesson buying generic low quality bedding and the difference was huge!
ReplyDeleteI have 7 rescue mice and three cages—You can imagine how much of this bedding I go through and how expensive it gets!
