Visiting the San Antonio Zoo

The San Antonio Zoo was first established in 1914 and is now open 365 days a year. It's a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The zoo is very large at 56 acres, but only 35 acres are open to the public with exhibits and walkways. The San Antonio Zoo houses over 9,000 animals of 750 different species.

My daughters and I visited the San Antonio Zoo with my Dad last Monday, Columbus Day, because there was no school that day. I haven't been in several years. It was very hot that day.

We saw many animals and even went into a butterfly house. I think my favorite exhibit was the lions. There was a Mom lion with 3 baby cubs, from what I could see. I think they just made their public debut at the Zoo this month.

I decided to bring my nice camera along, and filled it up with photos. Here are some of my favorites!

The majestic tiger with her scratching pad - a tree stump.

There were 3 Hippos total, and they were all sleeping underwater with brightly colored fish. One of them was young and/or a baby.

This fat little Shrew from Africa was so stinkin' adorable. Here he/she is mid-yawn. I posted a video on Facebook last week of the adorableness.

I honestly have no idea what kind of birds these are because they have so many. But I like this picture and the birds are pretty.

The Jaguar was up and about.

A small monkey lounging in his tree.

Mom Lion with her babies. When she finally decided to look at the camera and you could see the cubs' faces, I ran out of room on my SD card. I did get a pretty good picture with my phone camera though.

At the Japanese Tea Gardens.

After we walked through the entire zoo, we rode the Zoo Train. It's a small train that's fun for kids and runs about 2 miles through Brackenridge Park. We also visited the Japanese Tea Gardens which are right next to the zoo. It's a large garden in an old quarry with ponds of Koi fish and lots of flowers and trees. The kids had fun and it was a pretty good day.

We hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday and thanks for stopping by!

    1. OMD - you have no idea how much I loved this shrew!! I really don't know why but it was definitely one of my favorites. There were others in the enclosure as well, but this little fat one was just the most precious thing.

    1. I think I've only ever been to the SA Zoo before. There is a new aquarium in Austin that I haven't been too yet. Maybe one of these days.

  7. Sometimes it's hard to take good photos at a zoo, but yours are amazing! I haven't been to a zoo in a long time, but you've inspired me to make a trip soon.

    1. Ha! Well, I have about 100 more and not all of them are good photos. It was hardest to take pictures of animals through glass enclosures.

  8. I still love riding the train at the Detroit zoo - it's one of my favorite parts of the trip :) Your photos are beautiful - the beautiful coats of Cheetahs & Tigers never fails to amaze me. And I don't think I've seen a Shrew, but they sound like they're just as fun as otters.

    1. Oh, they have a train too? The train is lots of fun and my kids like it. I looked up photos of shrews to try and remember what kind this one was. Trust me - not all of them are cute lol!

I think those birds are crowned cranes -- the Bronx Zoo has them, too!
