Cats - if you want to scare the crap out of your human, here's what you need to do.
1. Go hide somewhere in the house.
Hide some place where your human will NEVER find you. Somewhere they'll never think to look. Ever. Then just take a nap for a few hours to pass time. After a while, they'll come looking.
2. Don't give up! Keep hiding!
Even if your human is calling your name and carrying around a can of delicious wet food, do NOT come out of your hiding spot. Once they can't find you in the house, they'll start walking around outside at 1 am in the morning for an hour trying to find you.
3. Get shut into a room that the human won't go into.
After hiding all night and not coming out for dinner, your human is sure to be worried sick by now. They'll never find you now because you're shut in a room that no one goes into all day long. Success. Just make sure they don't see you when they do go into this room to check for you. Next, your human will start posting your adorable photo on lost pet pages because they think you've run away. Congrats - you're famous!
4. Magically appear out of no where.
OK. You've missed dinner last night and breakfast this morning. It's almost dinner time today and you're starving. Time to magically appear on the kitchen table like nothing ever happened. Your human will be overcome with joy and relief to see you again and give you extra food.
5. Soak up all the extra love.
You've hit the jackpot now. Your human has missed you so much for the past day and is so happy to see you again that they can't keep their hands off of you. Enjoy the extra pets.
I seriously thought my kitten got out of the house and ran away. I was so depressed, worried, and sad all day Wednesday that I couldn't get anything done. I was checking the shelter website every 15 minutes, posted on Craigslist and a Lost and Found Pets Facebook group. I even prepared a Missing Cat poster to print out. The Cat Daddy also drove around looking for him during his lunch break.
I have no idea where he was all that time, but am so glad that he decided to come out of hiding for almost 24 hours. My best guess is that he got shut into my father's room.
So cats, if you want to scare the crap out of your human any time soon this is probably the best way to do it. However, I do NOT recommend it!
Has your cat ever done something like this? Tell us in the comments!
MOL, Roadside! Awesome job! Sadly, my human has found most of our hiding places, so we haven't been able to pull this on her for a while.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Bert likes to do that. He would run away, so it is always Mom's first thought.
ReplyDeleteNot possible here. I tell the dogs "Find Taki" and they sniff her out.
ReplyDeletethat would freak me out too,xx Rachel
ReplyDeleteYes, we have done that a time or two and have a few good hidey spots left. Yep ,it sure scares the peeps!
ReplyDeleteOh no, how scary for you! Yes, Samantha has done that to us a few times. Luckily we'd find her in less than 24 hours though, so never had to go as far as to report her missing. I think the fact that she's black helped her to keep more well hidden. We never did figure out where her hiding place was at the old house. She hasn't done it at the new house yet, though she has tried!
ReplyDeleteRaodside, bad kitty! You must have been petrified. When I was a little girl my childhood cat Patch hid under the bed when my loud uncle came over and scared him. I still remember how panicked my poor mother as.
ReplyDelete*taking notes*
ReplyDeleteAwesome job, Roadside! We're going to modify some of your tips to get our Mom to take an afternoon nap. She NEVER naps and we think she should. So, after searching for one of us all day and night, she'll be so tired the next day that when we come out of hiding, not only will we get extra attention and food, she'll have to take a nap. WIN!
Oh me cats and kittens Roadside, shame on you. Me's sissy Raena just had her own hiding scare and they aren't always happy. Glad you got found and got extra luv and noms, but me bets your humans would do dat anytime you ask. :) Be good and everypawdy rest up and have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteLuv ya'
Dezi and Raena
Well done, Roadside, pawsome job ! Pixie succeeds in hiding in the garden, but not in the house. Purrs

Ha!!!!!!! We can ALL relate!!!!!! Cody was never missing that long, but my Angel Bobo was missing for HOURS once when I moved with my ex into a house we were renting. Like you, we had looked EVERYWHERE. I was sick (as I am sure you were too!!!) I was crying, my ex and his cousin were combing the neighborhood. Then, hours and hours later, when I was crying on the front steps of the house....who came strolling out the front door as if NOTHING had ever happened? Yep! Bobo! I can soooooooo relate!! Glad Roadside is ok!!! It did make for a GREAT blog post! (((hugs))) catchatwithcarenandcody
ReplyDeleteScore! I've done that. We have a tiny 1100 sq ft condo but I can still hide really good. They look UTB and then on my sulk chair and then it's panic time. I love it when TW runs out into the hall looking.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it the best thing when we get the humans all worried and frantic!! It's great to see them in a sweat!! Well done!!
ReplyDeleteMy black kitty goes MIA within the house whenever she gets spooked. Which is frequently. It's maddening.
ReplyDeleteMom swears every house must have some weird portal known only to the cats.... Glad he "magically" appeared
ReplyDeleteI cat sat for my husband's aunt once. The cat could NOT have gotten out of the house, so I had that to soothe myself, but he disappeared quite spectacularly for quite a long time before showing up for food.. I was nearly beside myself.
ReplyDeleteThis happened with one of our cats, twice. Everything you write, we experienced. First time, we found her balled up behind a radiator. She'd been gone for hours. Second time, it was nearly the whole day. Apparently, she made it into our attic. Good thing she likes her meals at very specific times, or I'm sure she'd have been gone much longer!
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't look even a bit sorry! The only situation even similar to this is when Bear decided to go in the open pantry and I shut the door with him inside (accidentally) as I walked by. An hour later, I left for class - not hearing a single peep. It wasn't until a couple hours later when I got home that I started panicking because he always meets me at the door. I called his name a few times ... and only then did I hear a quiet meow from the pantry (Bear is NOT a quiet meower). I opened the door and got a look like I was interrupting something. Okay, then! So he can't stand being closed into or out of a room ... can't stand the enclosed space of boxes ... but he digs hanging out in the pantry for hours for no reason :p
ReplyDeleteMy brother was cat-sitting for his boss's cats - one of whom was a well known escape artist. As he was washing dishes at the kitchen sink, he glanced outside to see the cat out in the yard. He chased the cat all over the neighborhood for an hour before he realized it was the wrong cat :)
Oh yes Rhette did it not too long ago, we're still not sure where he was at. Love Dolly
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, Don't give up, Keep hiding :)
