The National Dog Show Presented by Purina® to Include Two New Breeds

The National Dog Show presented by Purina® will broadcast on NBC this Thanksgiving, November 22nd, at noon in all time zones after Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The National Dog Show will be hosted by award-winning TV personality, author, and Broadway star, John O'Hurley.

Returning to offer expert analysis is American Kennel Club-licensed judge David Frei, who has officiated at dog shows worldwide and, alongside O’Hurley, has co-hosted the competition since its inception in 2002. NBC Sports correspondent Mary Carillo will report from inside the show ring, and former U.S. Olympic figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir will offer behind-the-scenes access as digital contributors.

This year, two new American Kennel Club sanctioned breeds will be included in the competition. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje from the sporting group and the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen from the hound group, bringing the total recognized number of breeds to 192. While the two breeds may be new to The National Dog Show this year, they have been around for much longer.

The breeds in the photo from left to right: Bergamasco, Pappillon, Great Dane, Nederlandse Kooikerhondje, and Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen.

The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje origins can be found as early as the 1500s. In the 1600s, this dog was trained to work with duck decoys. The hunter would train his dog to lure ducks into a trap. This breed didn't make its way to the US until 1999, when the first recorded litter was born here. You can learn more about the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje here.

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is a French scent-hound that has gone through over 400 years of evolution to get where it's at today. The Club du Griffon Vendéen that was founded in 1907 recognized two varieties of the Basset Griffon Vendéen, The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen and the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen. By the 1950s, the Grand was separated into its own standard and considered a separate breed. You can learn more about the GBGV from our friends at My GBGV Life.

The Best in Show winner last year was a Brussels Griffon named Newton. Newton impressed the judges with his superior condition and form, beautiful coat and loving personality.

In celebration of Thanksgiving and the National Dog Show, Purina is inviting pet owners across the nation to share why they are thankful for their pet. From Nov. 9-25, for every unique post shared on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram that includes @Purina and #DogThanking, Purina will donate $1 (up to $25,000) to Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation Pets and Vets program. This amazing program helps pair shelter pets with veterans coping with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety and other service-related challenges as they transition back to civilian life following their service.

  1. We almost entered this show, but at the last minute I realized we couldn't go, as we had no dog sitter. But next year, we are entering for sure!
