Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ to Help Pets in Need at PetSmart

While our own pets may be lucky enough to sleep in their own home and eat healthy meals each day, some pets are not. PetSmart® is stepping up to the plate with a huge and exciting announcement.

Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ when you shop at PetSmart.

Today, PetSmart has announced the launch of their Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program in celebration of the their 30th anniversary. For every bag of food purchased online or in-store at one of their 1,500+ stores across America, Canada, and Puerto Rico, the leading pet specialty retailer will donate a meal to a pet in need.

This program runs March 1 - December 31, 2017. It's amazing that Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program will last for the rest of this year. PetSmart hopes to reach a goal of donating 60 million meals. This is PetSmart's largest philanthropic campaign in its 30-year history.

The Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™  program includes all brands and sizes of dog and cat food bags purchased from PetSmart, online or in-store. Nonprofit partner PetSmart Charities plans to collaborate with national nonprofits to help distribute the pet food donation directly to pets in need.

According to David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D., president of PetSmart Charities, up to 7 million pets enter shelters every year across North America. While these pets await adoption, they need access to pet food. This means pet food is a significant operating expense for animal welfare organizations.

In addition to donating pet food to shelters, PetSmart will also donate to food banks and pantries. Not all pets in need live at shelters. Many live with their families who are served by food banks. Unfortunately, pet food is a rare offering from these facilities. As a result some families in need often sacrifice their own food, feeding their pets human food to ensure they have something to eat.

For 30 years, PetSmart, with its nonprofit partner, PetSmart Charities, has been a leader in adoption, saving more than 7.3 million pets’ lives – more adoptions than any other brick-and-mortar organization. PetSmart Charities is the leading funder of animal welfare across North America, donating more funding support – about $300 million to date – to help pets in need.
